Writing is like singing to me I'm not very good at either one but I enjoy the fun of it. When you use music, singing or maybe art to plunge into the depts of your soul it takes on a whole different dimension. I use those things as a distraction away from deep thought when I need a break from my natural state.
Speaking of distractions we've been watching a new bbc Sherlock Holmes series it's interesting to me to watch Sherlock grow younger as I grow older. To write well means to immerse yourself in the experience of living; what motivates people to do the weird things they do, to catch the cadance of their movements, their language.
To find time to write at all is to lock yourself away from the living.
The result is the writer is a submarine or a vampire, popping in to their loved-one's lives to suck out all their vital juices, and then dive in to their work again.
Friends, neighbours, and family, all those marvellous sources for material, will recognize themselves in the writer's work. This is not always flattering, especially if the book is good.
The writer needs extremely patient and forgiving people around her.
Hence, the need for a detailed, descriptive, expressive letter of thanks in every book.

I agree with what you have written, jgnat, some of which is borne out in Carlos Baker's biography of Ernest Hemingway. Personally, writing is not a lonely world because I live in a neighborhood of many published writers and we confer constantly. Not to mention, of course, the wonderful support and feedback of our friends here on JWN! You put it so well, Nancy, and thank you, new hope, for your reference to Anne Frank.
No longer must we writers lock ourselves away, though times of solitude and reflection are necessary.

A writter needs a subject, and if that subject is humanity how can he ever be alone. I think compound and complex you once wrote in an earlier post, about a park bench...well did you invent the charactors on that park bench or were they experiences from people you new? Sorry Earnest Hemmingway writting is the least lonly profession,,,with or without the Noble Price for literature.
