Heinlein -- I remember discovering his books in the library as a teenager in junior high school. I read them all -- and I reread them every few years. Stranger in a Strange Land isn't my favorite, I think I like The Moon is a Harsh Mistress the best.
I recently reread all the Foundation books (Asimov) and was surprised to think they aren't really that good. Asimov had great plot ideas but was a pedestrian writer.

I haven't read all the "greats." I agree with you that some are not that great, not to me anyway. If I don't connect with the story, it doesn't matter who wrote it.

"History's Worst Predictions and the People Who Made Them," by Eric Chalin. Yes, C. T. Russell made the cut (so did William Miller and Joseph Smith), though J. F. Rutherford and Nelson Barbour have only a brief mention in the Russell chapter, and Fred Franz is conspicuous by his absence--even though the author cites several doomsday dates from the Franz era.
Everything is Miscellaneous by Weinberger. I have read Stranger AND When Prophecy Fails. Every book changes me a little. These new perspectives allow me to see new connections- how people tick. I fear though that I will not be understood by others who don't have that shared experience. Rip, I am reminded of the Bethel dinner shortly after Russell's failed prophecy, where the room was quiet. Shortly after The faithful started to find reasons to still believe. I think I read it on the Bible Student website.
Heinlein had great plot ideas, too, and adventurous stories, but he wasn't the best writer, either. However, I can still read his books and enjoy them.
Just read "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" recently and I can't recommend it highly enough. I may start a thread on it it's worthy of one.

Graham Greene's ' The heart of the matter' from 1948! Yeah, it's old, but so am I, LOL. I've read a lot of his books- they're all good.
