Not sure about the toes, but I recalled that they should correspond to the ten horn. Russell said that Portugal and Austria-Hungary are one of the horns. Either way, Portugal is small and hardly influential country, and Austria-Hungary disintegrated two years after the death of Russell.
I personally view the Second World War and the development of the atomic bomb as an important milestone. Now man has developed to a point where he can destroy himself and his home. Policies of deterant, e.g., Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) and "balance of terror," are not reassuring at all. And there's a book out about the mistakes and accidents involving nuclear warheads in the US the last century. It makes for frightening reading. We should have learnt from the baby swallow, which defecates outside the nest (on the porch floor). If there is a God, now would be a good time for him to jump in to save the planet and its inhabitants.
