Have been within 50 feet of him. If my leg hadn't just come out of a cast, I could have walked down the steps to say hello. Really, my favorite Beatle, though it's hard to choose. I liked his sensitive, tender spiritual nature.
One of my favorite of his solo efforts:

Happy Birthday, George.
Once I turned on the radio, and George was doing an interview on the New York FM rock station. It was quite a while after the Great Divorce. He said all his life problems boiled down to one fact, a fact that he could not change even if he had 100 times the fame of a Beatle. Paul was x hours, y minutes, and z seconds older than he was. There was no rancor. It was only a statement of fact.
Paul and he knew each other quite a while before they met the others. There was sibling rivalry and love. His family looked the other way when he went off to Hamburg, underage and, therefore, illegally. The conditions were wretched but they were free of parental supervision. George was picked up by the Hamburg police and German authorities and expelled from the country. The immigration officials bought him a train ticket. They were not the Fab Four yet. The train was a local. He did not call his family, probably b/c he had no money. Each mile the train progressed, his mind cooked up greater business deals for the older ones still in Hamburg. He lost his house key. His parents took the news well. He became more and more depressed. They were conquering all sorts of kinky women in his mind. Paul, in particular, was having the time of his life. His mom ordered him to go get milk to get him off the sofa. There was a big family fight which his mom won. He went to the local store. As he enters, he thinks the stress has caused insanity. Someone who looks just like Paul is purchasing items. He confronts the hallucination. The hallucination tells him that there was a fire incident at the club and that Germany wanted the older band members out of the country immediately so the German government paid for a plane ticket. Paul was recuperating from the trauma at home.
He never told his son that he had been a Beatle. One day in a lower grade about 15 little kids chased his son home, serenading him with "Yellow Submarine."He had no idea why they were singing "Yellow Submarine" at him. He knew the song but had no clue that it might have some relationshiip to him. Finally, crying so hard, he made it safely home. He told his father about the gang of "Yellow Submarine" kids. His father said he should have told him that he had been a Beatle. He had Uncle Paul, Uncle Ringo but he thought they were just uncles.
George was my first Beatle that I saw with my own eyes. I was shocked that he looked exactly like Geroge Harrison.
