An even more accurate analogy would be that there are 6 sextillion small dirty rocks on the ground and one shining diamond. The rocks might turn out to be diamonds if cleaned up, but you don't know and don't have time to find out. Do you take the diamond or do you assume that all the rocks are diamonds in the rough and therefore the one diamond is worthless?
Because we really don't know what is out there. Even if there's microbial life, intelligent life might be a big step beyond that. So why devalue the one planet we know has life just because a bunch of others might? To the best of our knowledge so far, we're one of a kind.
