I don't know what awesome comment you made in the initial post because it didn't show up, but I am picturing an incredible red pocket knife with a Watchtower symbol and a cross on it.

Horrible, if the document proves to be true!
It is in full support of serving in the military and avows to have given no instructions to the contrary. And this during the WW II!
Incredible...

Weren't the Swiss neutral in WWII?
The main problem for JWs in the Swiss army wouldn't be the risk of fighting, it would be the risk of being drafted into the Swiss Guard to protect the Pope at the Vatican.

They were definitely NOT in the army. The Declaration was penned by their lawyer in an attempt to pacify the authorities, stating that they were doing their duty as obedient citizens etc. Knorr took the branch office to task for this when he made his first visit to Europe after the war. It is discussed in Garbe and I believe also Hesse, I can check up the references when I am where the books are.

Please, read The Watchtower, October 1, 1947, page 303. Brother Knorr, talks about "Declaration". (I have a copy, but I can not paste)
