Excuse my laughter, but just one part of tradition, or all of it? If one part the argument is dead, if ' all of it" then you also accept (Just a few):

1. The right of a man to brutalise his wife and children.

2. The right to marry before puberty (often practised in European Chrsitian aristocracies)

3. The right to have more than one wife (See the Bible) as practised in Jewish Society and many other societies.

Why go on ....

And while we are speaking about tradition I want to present something I have noted before on this site that should make sentient people think. For over 100,000 years do you know what the average 15-16 year old female was called? Mom.

For over 100,000 years do you know what the average 35 year old human was called? Deceased.

So the 'traditional' marriage arrangement, or whatever it was called a long time ago, by necessity to enable human DNA to be passed on in a manner that would better ensure another generation, was a man (likely much older) to a girl. That was called normal. No one gave it a whit's thought. The past few generations where prosperity (primarily the abundance of calories on a fairly continuous basis) has enabled humans to change 'tradition' is but a very small sliver when compared to human history. So Big Mac, you have neither history, tradition nor current cultural changes on your side. You seem to want things in life to be fixed at the point (which is a very very small segment of human history) where you are most comfortable with them.

Pierce's complaints concern two problems:

1. Is that there are still inequalities in law that have not been addressed.

So ask yourself, what's at the heart of his complaint? It is simple prejudice that inserted bias against people like Andrew in the past. Who inserted that bias? ummm! Surely they must have been traditionalists, Like (deleted - grin).

2. The other problem Pierce mentions is that (in his opinion) gay marriage will not change is the prejudice of many. Maybe so, but again the problem is the hard-heartedness and mean spiritedness of so many believers in the Bible.

So the real problem is, as usual, the hard heartedness and meanspiritedness of the traditionalists.

I think however, that marriage, as traditionally viewed, does have many problems. Who today wants to see marriage as a permanent, indissoluble union, with no escape, in the event that a person finds they have married an incompatible partner? Yet that's part of traditional 'Christian' marriage as defined by Jesus.

I wonder how much violence has been caused by the Jesus ruling of "no divorce"?
