In the study edition of the WT for July 2014 - Jehovah's people 'renounce unrighteousness' - paragraph 13 reads:

13 The Bible principles discussed above do not apply only to our choice of entertainment. Opinions about dress and grooming, health and nutrition, and other personal matters may also trigger controversy. Accordingly, if no Scriptural principle is being violated, Jehovah’s people wisely abstain from arguing over such matters, “for a slave of the Lord does not need to fight, but needs to be gentle [tactful, ftn.] toward all.” — 2 Tim. 2:24 .

I bet they would be able to say that they do not interfere with 'grooming' issues such as growing beard, while still segregating those who dare to have one, as it is clear in the following section 'avoid bad associations!'

    Two points:

    1. The WTBTS has a l-o-n-g history of fabricating "scriptural principles" to support whatever wacky idea the WT leadership wants to dream up, (think: "overlapping generation," or a single "this generation" that runs from from 1852 to at least 1992, 140 years!). I'm sure you can think of other examples; the list is long.
    2. Once said "scriptural principle" is published in a WT publication it effectively becomes law for the rank and file JW membership. No questions of the leaders from the members are allowed; hence the not-too-subtle admonition: Jehovah’s people wisely abstain from arguing over such matters.

Listen, Obey and Be Blessed: It's a Cult!

^^^^This. They turn their understanding of "principles" into laws for the JW. For instance, smoking, gambling, oral sex between marriage mates, birthdays and the list goes on. These are found nowhere in the bible as being condemned, yet they say the principle is violated and they have made a law, a DF offence out of what they feel is a scriptural principle.
