Many public school students do well. Our public schools play a vital role in this country. Home schooling is not an alternative over the long run. I want to meet these parents who know it all to teach it all. It is impossible.

BOTR: Home schooling is not an alternative over the long run. I want to meet these parents who know it all to teach it all. It is impossible.

It clearly IS possible as the article that Shadow shared shows. A key point in that article is this: "parents and students from the home-schooling community say the nontraditional method yields teens that are more independent and therefore better prepared for college life."

It is not necessary for a parent to "know it all" to teach it all. If a parent, or who ever supervises the home-schooled/independent student, knows how students learn and how to problem solve, they can teach them these skills. Then the student can learn the content themselves. No doubt, from time-to-time they will benefit from the skills of an outside tutor that is an expert in a particular field, but to say that "it is impossible" is to ignore the facts.

    Terry,

    "Cistine Chapel"

Time to get a 3x5 card with the word "Sistine"

Correcting guys/ladies who are smarter and more knowledgeable than I am makes me feel smart, even if for a moment.

By the way, thank you for your great comments. I never skip your threads.

I also believe that there's home schooling and there's home schooling. Similarly there are public schools and there are public schools. Public school, especially in some areas of Los Angeles County, are not much better than home schooling for christians, just more dangerous

There are larger societal issues at stake. Homeschooling gets me upset b/c homeschooling would be my literal death. Public schools are important. I learned a lot of skills that can't be taught in books. Hopefully, homeschooling will reverse. My parents could never teach me. Even the Newark school system had special programs for various students. My parents chose Newark b/c my brother had cerebal palsy. There were few school systems that provided special services. He did not need them but they were present. I can't imagine a home school high school experience.

Nothing will rein in the fundies now. Sometimes I am glad I am older. Rick Santorum scared the hell out of me.

Thanks for the Cistene/Sistene correction. I probably pulled Cistern out of my frontal lobes. That's like confusing Cavalry and Calvary.

In regard to the Topic title I probably should have ended the title with a question mark.

HOME SCHOOL and the upcoming generation of scientifically illiterate kids?

With my last 3 kids we tried educating the youngest, Helena at home. It proved a daunting task!

I spent as much time as she did on the work and my wife even more than that. My daughter completely missed

the social aspect of her school. Learning in isolation was a torture for her.

She had been going to a magnet school, but the kicked her out. She was having emotional breakdowns regularly upsetting

the other students. She was well loved and earned high marks, but the emotional stuff was more than they would tolerate.

She has had a rough time of it, but she went for her GED and got that. She hated settling for it. Now she's preparing to try college again. She had the same problem the first time she went. I hope to see her bridge the gap between her room and the outside world very soon, alas.

I prefer Sistine. Sorry, I couldn't let it go. I hope you are not testing how pedantic I am.

Shadow, your article is about homeschooled kids who have gotten into college. It has nothing to say about all of the homeschooled kids who don't make it there.

Exposure to some of the home-schooled witness children was not positive. There were a couple of exceptions but 99% of them seemed to lose interest and their secular education ended. Poor reading/remedial skills - I even heard witness parents who sent their children thru the public system talk about this.

There should be laws insuring a proper education for all children no matter - egg and sperm donors should not be in control of this ever! If the parents are intelligent and educated perhaps they should be granted permission.

I agree - there are some very bad public schools and always has been. It is difficult to terminate an inadequate teacher - the flip side is all the dedicated, intelligent, ones. Some public schools are incredible and win awards in science/math, etc. I was told from JWs that most JW home schooled children never complete thru high school obtaining a diploma. Those demonic, pathetic, governing body, losers should be held responsible for this. Parents are stupid to plan their children's lives according to their dictates. Many private, religious, schools hire teachers who are not certified teachers - very little college. I'm not saying many aren't good educators.

Great teacher, I am glad you spotted the obvious...... the report is on the best home schoolers who have done well enough to attain college. By definition they have achieved much. The data that is important, is a measure of ....all....home schooled students against traditional means. For their whole education and overall achievment. This is important as home schoolers tend to do well but finish witn far fewer qualifications due to the constraints of home teaching and nearly all don't go beyond a basic high school education without entering school.

Of course there will be SOME people at home getting the best tuition available, hired tutors, coaching, one on one teaching all day with specialists in all subjects.........then there is the child of a JW window cleaner. JW's aee the poorest and least educated large religious denomination in the world!

Some parents opt to teach their children, despite neither being qualified to teach or educated. It is laying the odds of educatiinal success for the child at almost impossible in these circumstances. I have seen this happen, I know JW kids that have had this and now are on state benefits.

One JW I grew up with did have home schooling, his mother was a retired teacher. He scored very highly......the problem being he only took and passed one exam! 12 years of schooling for a maths high school certificate. Compare that to the average student who can take up to 11.

I know and spend time with kids who have had the best education for sale in the UK, it does not compare to the home schooled JW's in my old congregations and yet they are all in the same job market. A child in school spends 9:00- 3:30 in classrooms (bar 1.5 hrs) learning up to 11 topics, it is impossible to replicate at home without a lot of money. Of course the one's that have the money have the great grades...& continue in college. But it isn't JW kids and we all know it.
