The WTS does believe that “if we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (NRSV) – but the only difference is that the WTS wants us to confess our sins to them, and of course Jesus is always just an afterthought.
I agree Qcf.
It is a shame that after the long dark ages ended by the Reformation that so many would return to certain practices of the Catholic Church - the confessional.
It is not a priest or elder body that makes me clean.
Perry I agree, the JW"s are so close to what the Catholic chuch was back in the day its not even funny!!
LOL, I actually think the Catholic Church is OK- although I've never been in one. The confessional is just a ritual- if you are repentant, you go to a priest and confess, and are then forgiven. It is the JW judicial committees that that determine guilt that are un-Christian.
The JWs believe in confession. They just interpret it differently than other Xtian religions. You confess to the elders, and that way, the book publishing company has the control, not G*d.
You must be thinking of a different Reformation, Perry. :P In my mind, that was a 'continuation' of the Dark Ages ... it was just as brutal as the Inquisition. The COE is mostly the RCC, tweaked by Henry VIII. I don't deny that he was a scholar, but in my (truly humble) opinion, the creation of the COE was about power and making a name for himself to go down in history (which he succeeded in doing). The Lutherans seem to be closer to the a real 'reformed' catholic church - as it should be, though, as Martin Luther was the true reformer, not Henry VIII.

The Reformers made great strides in bringing biblical christianity into the mainstream. However, they were not the originators of biblical christianity, they were just politically connected and thus magnified its precepts. Neither did they do this without error, or go far enough. They got most of their ideas from the indiginous Christians of Europe who were called by a number of derogatory names and who were also the objects of much of the inquisitions and Papal bulls.
Groups like the Waldenses, Albigenses, Anabaptists and others were originally aligned with the Reformers until it became politically expedient to also alienate these groups.
A good read on this is The Reformers and Their Stepchildren.
New International Version (NIV)
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
New International Version (NIV)
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
I Jn.1:9 NIV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
He is faithful to His word to forgive because He is Truth. He is just to forgive because He took the full justice/judgment of God on our behalf and in our stead at Calvary. Forgiveness is based on relationship, confession, owning up before Him... which not only allows Him to forgive, but to finish what He started in us by grace; that is to cleanse us from ALL (not some) unrighteousness.
