I came across this article today and really appreciated it's positive message; and so I wanted to share a few choice excerpts that I thought were particularly relevant for this group:

7 Things Remarkably Happy People Do Often

    1. Make good friends - Make real friends. You'll live a longer, happier life.

    3. Actively pursue your goals - So be grateful for what you have... then actively try to achieve more. If you're pursuing a huge goal, make sure that every time you take a small step closer to achieving it you pat yourself on the back.

    4. Do what you excel at as often as you can - Everyone has at least a few things they do incredibly well. Find ways to do those things more often. You'll be a lot happier.

    7. Live the life you want to live - "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me." What other people think--especially people you don't even know--doesn't matter. What other people want you to do doesn't mater. Your hopes, your dreams, your goals... live your life your way. Surround yourself with people who support and care not for the "you" they want you to be but for the real you.

And most of all, realize that happiness is a choice.

Very true! And you're right, these are good tools for recovering JWs.

I liked the rest of the list, too. Being thankful also can help a lot. It sets a positive note for the day, even when life is bashing you down.

    Good post! thanks. :)

Edit: Happiness *is* a choice. It doesn't mean we are always bubbling over, rather that we choose to dwell on the positive things in our life instead of focussing on the negative.

Yes Oubliette .... but its our attitude and not what we do that is the important secret of happiness.

Oubliette, I noticed this on Yahoo News earlier today. I'm glad you posted it.

My favorite line under the Pursue Goals heading was this:

Goals you don't pursue aren't goals, they're dreams, and dreams only make you happy when you're dreaming.

I would have added "Finds Creative Ways to Masturbate" to the list.

Nice post. Thanks. I'll bet if I saw the rest of the list one thing would be on it: Counting one's blessings each day or often and placing other things in the proper perspective.

What other people want you to do DOES matter. Living life without considering how your life meshes with the lives of your family, for instance, can destroy the lives of others. What if they need you for support? Are you going to go after your dreams, hopes, goals and live life your way? How selfish can a person get???
