As I've been chatting with a JW neighbour he has said, "Heck, some people think WE are a cult!" and scoffs at very idea. How ludicrous (he thinks)! This wouldn't be uncommon - what exactly do JWs think a cult is? Do any of you know?
JWs and the idea of a cult

They think that JW's wear hoods at the meetings, have a secret handshake and there are hit men who will kill you when you leave. JW's think that it means secret society. Most JW's cognitive dissonance kicks in when you read the dictionary definition of cult.

You get the same reaction from Mormons and scientologists.

When I was in I denied it was a cult. Now that I'm out, and see the relgion for what it is, and has become.....it's a cult.

I would use the reasoning book reason. We don't follow one person, we do not hide information about our religion, we live with everyone else not a comune... I don't remember there may be more

They give their own meanings to words to suit their agenda, so of course a negative term like cult could never be seen to apply to them under their definition.
Use the BITE model and they have no wiggle room.

Every man who hits his wife would deny he's a wife basher and condemn them. Same principle: The bad labels apply to others, not us.

I remember that the typical definition of a cult as a JW was a fringe religion following a charismatic leader with a messianic bent...the BITE model means nothing to them.

I've always heard "a cult has a human leader. Our leader is Jesus Christ"

If you have an article in your magazine explaining that you're not in a cult... You're in a cult.
