My ex who still has the JW mind set told me " You can't believe scientists because they believe in mermaids " I said that can't be true ! He said " I saw it on tv last week " That is the problem with some of these shows.

I agree with DataDog it all starts with an idea.

A old friend of mine now believes in ancient aliens and watches all the time. He is older and I just say "anything is possible." lol He is so excited about this new knowledge. He did tell me he now has lost faith in God. I don't know which one is worse belief in God or the aliens ???

Pseudoscience is one thing and real science is another. So many people perfer the fake stuff. I find that really sad !

I have noticed an increase in alien shows over the past several years. there are some truly investigative report ones that give both sides and provide possible explanations....i have watched so many for book research and do find the ancient aliens stories fascinating...like i said...looooove sci fi. i am a sci fi nerd. so i like that stuff....

i also love history in general whether a documentary on the black plague or the bible...just to give insite. there has been much cruelty done around this world in the name of religion...amd i am a sci ci writer and mix it all together.

has anyone heard about the age gene rezearch done on worms? and what is all that extra brain capacity for? etc. there are so many questions. it fascinates me.

okay i am on my phone and it is making posting a hassle...more later

Leave it to Perry to preach an even more screwed up version of science than the show, "Ancient Aliens."

and what is all that extra brain capacity for?

It's actually a myth that we only use 10% or some other small percentage of our brains. In fact most of our brain is active at all times, though some parts fire up and generate more heat while working on a problem, and we can see this in realtime brain scans. But there's no "cold spots" where the brain just isn't doing anything.

JWs perpetuate the 10% myth in public talks because it meshes with their belief that we are imperfect and not functioning at full capacity. People who promote woo also like this myth because it implies that there are mystery areas in the brain that might allow telekinesis, telepathy, etc. The myth probably came from a newspaper writer in the early 20th century who misunderstood the finding that the brain's gray cells are outnumbered by white cells ten to one.

The gray cells do the thinking, so this would imply that the rest of the brain is unused, but in fact the white matter connects the areas of the brain, so it's crucial to have. Men have more gray cells than women as a percentage of their brain mass, but this means that women have a higher ratio of white matter, which confers its own benefits.

Even without there being a massive untapped portion of the brain, it's amazing what we can do with training, thanks to neuroplasticity. And some people are "mutants" who employ a different section of the brain to perform a task than an ordinary person does, like Scott Flansburg, the human calculator. So there's lots of fascinating scientific facts out there without these pseudo-science shows that make scientists look bad.

    For fun, hell yeah.

I loved Chariots of the Gods when I saw it as a kid, and always thought it would be cool if we were being guided by another species, from a galaxy far away. A Star Trek kind of utopian society we could join when we are 'ready' ... yeah, I love that idea.

    :)

I saw that show about Mermaids. It was not true and those that were in the show were all actors not Scientists. Check out Snopes.com.

Be prepared for a beat-down if you start a thread like this. Only things that have been scientifically proven and written in a peer reviewed paper are believed. This is ironic because science often begins with, "What if???"

Nice troll and misrepresentation of several people. You should go into religious publishing with honesty like that.

To the OP, it is quite possible and some even say likely that there is other life outside of our planet. There is even an idea that life is an inevitable consequence of physics and chemistry given a sufficiently large universe.

However, there is no proof that aliens built the pyramids or genetically engineered humans or anything like what they show on Ancient Aliens.

Ancient Aliens is bs. Don't get me wrong, I am open to the possibility that there could be intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. But the show clearly arrives at conclusions based on speculation and faulty reasoning. Lots of fallacies like false dichotomy. It's clearly sensationalist Sci-Fi entertainment masquerading as a Science documentary.

Cosmos is nice. Through the Wormhole I have not seen or heard of until this thread.
