West Antarctic glacier loss appears unstoppable, UCI-NASA Study Finds, 4 feet of sea level rise

A rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears to be in irreversible decline, with nothing to stop the entire glacial basin from disappearing into the sea, according to researchers at UC Irvine and NASA.

The new study presents multiple lines of evidence – incorporating 40 years of observations – that six massive glaciers in the Amundsen Sea sector “have passed the point of no return,” according to glaciologist Eric Rignot, a UC Irvine Earth system science professor who is also with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The new study has been accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

The accelerating flow rates, lack of pinning points and sloping bedrock all point to one conclusion, Rignot said:

“The collapse of this sector of West Antarctica appears to be unstoppable. The fact that the retreat is happening simultaneously over a large sector suggests it was triggered by a common cause, such as an increase in the amount of ocean heat beneath the floating parts of the glaciers. At this point, the end appears to be inevitable.”

More evidence that the end is near - that's all we need.

I hope this isn't the tipping point.

Thanks besty but I prefer to trust that former degenerate drug user Rush Limbag along with fox news for my science updates. Live free and drown!

The Dutch are going to become the new Saudis for their land reclamation and dike building knowledge. That is if they don't find themselves underwater.

If it's not the Russians, it's the Islamic extremists or earthquakes or food shortages or melting glaciers. It's always - but always - something hovering around the darkly imminent corner. Oh for a troubled free corner...I know: Paradise earth under Jehovah's loving rulership!

It hasn't happened long enough to be certain what the results will be. I don't see anyone from Bognor moving to higher ground!

Instead of rising sea levels you might find the run away greenhouse effect and the melting icecaps will cause the atmosphere to be more humid. Perhaps the water canopy from Noah's era will be recreated? :)

Already covered by Associated Press. The time frame involves centuries for dramatic change to occur with regard to coastlines.

It would be well if they could at least present a truthful sub headline - "Volume of melted ice enough to raise global sea levels by 4 feet". Are sea levels 4 feet higher? If no, then the ice isn't melted. Stop the misleading hype.

Climate change is true. Climates are always changing. There are droughts and floods and fires to prepare for. Beyond that, is conjecture or speculation about future climate conditions - and much of that is local.

Ancient texts attributed the end of the world - or civilization - to bad human behaviour of one kind or another. Noah's flood - boy did sea levels rise there! - is premised on complacent, pleasure-seeking humans who brought it all on themselves - including presumably the naughty behaviour of swaddled babies. Watch those little screamers drown, oh Lord!

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Bad humans cause all the bad in the world. They deserve punishment. How can they do this to future generations?

It is telling that, as with religious dogma, who you are determines if you are taken seriously. Start questioning the status quo and your motivations are questioned and alliance with evil interests declared. Bring back Satan - he was more likeable than Big Business that blow big smoke into the sky - oh and let's not forget farting livestock that add to the problem or, rarely discussed, the overpopulation of the earth by humans.
