THIS is a great example of the difference between the Watch Tower Society approach to life and the power of one person to change the world for the better.
The game of CHESS is the example!

Here is what JW's are taught:
“Chess has been a game of war since it originated…a play substitute for the art of war….a danger of stirring up competition with one another even developing hostility towards another, something the Bible warns Christians to avoid doing” 1973 AWAKE!

    Okay--got that?

Now, watch this . . . see what one man could do to improve the lives of kids

In the Wt. leaders rabid antiestablishmentarianism ( how often do you get to use that term :D ) they made a poison out of healthy constructs such as education, sports, recreation, community involvement, friendships.

    Thanks for the post.

Chess has probably saved my remaining life.

Hopefully, it will help my children's.

Just to highlight the flip flopping nature of the WTS counsel, this was printed : Awake '96 9/22 p 22

    Social Gatherings That Upbuild

Will you serve refreshments? If so, they do not have to be lavish or expensive for your guests to have a pleasant time. (Luke 10:38-42) “Sometimes we have pizza night,” says Sanchia, a girl from South Africa. Guests will often volunteer to bring a few items.
What are some things you can do at a gathering—besides simply watching TV, listening to music, or conversing? “We usually plan the evening in advance,” says Sanchia. “We’ve played games or had someone play the piano, so we could sing songs together.” An African youth named Masene says: “We sometimes play cards, draughts [checkers], and chess.”

This takes nothing away from Terry's excellent post, it just shows what a gum-tree you find yourself up if you try to follow WTS advice ....

Not really mostly due to the fact that they are poorly educated and know nothing if any of

    human psychological and sociological behavior.

    .

They moniker a badge of wisdom and guidance from the supposed holy spirit of Yahweh,

which is quite redundantly ignorant and many times harmful to humanity from a modern sociological perspective.

This demeaning the game of chess is just but one example of making a claim on something which has little actualization

    in reality.

If playing the game of Chess provokes acts of violence between the two participants, then it would be

known for doing so, its simply a game strategy, skill and intelligence, something the later the leaders of the WTS.

are noted to have a small portion themselves.

No they don't have a good grasp on any subject because their 'reality tunnel' is very restricted due to a heavy bias towards a vindictive Deity that must be appeased so as not to be emotionally 'sad'.

With such a messed up reality tunnel any effort or direction given by this corporation to help people will have the ulterior motive of not makeing their fickle Deity sad, and not necessarily be of any real good towards those in need of help, also they have a strong desire to add spin to things which distorts and twist logic to the breaking point. But even a broken clock is right twice durring the day so too some of the advice may be good but don't count on it or rely on it and you will spare yourself much confussion and trouble.

    War, hostility, violence.

I always wondered why chess tournaments had security that rivalled G-20 summits. ;)

Can the blind lead the blind would be a good follow up question.

If I remember right, they criticized Dr. Spock for his "failed" psychological studies with children. This from the brilliant minds that brought us, "The Youth Book".

I count myself as a failed result of that damn book.

Has the Watchtower ever claimed to be in the business of helping people? Is there a quote somewhere?

    I found this on jw.org:

Global Printing—Helping People to Learn About God

Jehovah’s Witnesses operate 15 printing facilities worldwide, producing Bible-based literature in some 700 languages.

They are a publishing company. They publish literature, and their sole goal seems to be vindicating the name of their own religious organization. They take great pride in publishing numbers about themselves, except of course, any financial details.
