They have instituted a citi bike system in Manhattan. Evidently this is similar to other cities. I have heard great things about this and am thinking that this is for me. I am very intimidated about riding a bike in the Manhattan traffic. Does anyone have experience with this?

Cofty, I just did the math and if it took you 80 minutes to do 18 miles then that is a 4.4 minute mile. Not bad for a hilly ride!
My hubby was averaging about that until he bought the racing bike. Then he broke the 4 minute mile mark without any extra effort. It really is about the bike.
That is, if you're into speed. Some of us are just trying to see the sights and get a little moderate exercise. It's all about what you want to get out of it.

Sparrowdown, I am so jealous of your bike trail. That sounds absolutely beautiful! Complete with a candy striped lighthouse! Can you actually get close to it? Climb to the top?
I just love lighthouses!

I use to really get a kick out of riding. I had a Motobecane 10 speed, took me up and down the West Coast, USA.
Thanks cofty, might look into riding again.

I just got home from our local Critical Mass ride. I'm new to the group and have really enjoyed myself so far. I did their Sunday Morning ride, too. Much better way to appreciate life than sitting in a kingdom hall. I am thinking about buying an Electra bike. I'm currently using my daughters bike. We ride along here http://207.156.20.146/fpc/commerce/com09117.jpg and through all the neighborhoods downtown.

Gypsy Sam that deserves a WOW! So beautiful! I love palm trees. (Living where nature grows, waters, and fertilizes Douglas fir trees...) lol
