The insurgents are just 60 miles from Baghdad this evening. Oil refineries have already been taken and the price of crude oil is soaring.

I agree Cofty, and this particular conflict seems entirely to be religious, they have by-passed the rich pickings of the oil fields, which the Kurds are happy to pick up, to pursue their goal of killing their religious enemies.
When religion is a thing of the past, the world will be such a better place !
It is a waste. It is also another example that highlights how Islam is completely incompatible with civilization and freedom. Perhaps the people of Iraq can now see that contrast, and fight for the freedom that they were temporarily afforded by NATO.

I imagine Iranian Shiites will be shiiting themselves at the prospect of a Saudi funded Sunni jihad on their doorstep.

Arab does as arab will. The west has bean dealt a bloody nose time and time again.
Intervention has only served to cost lives and still the jehadies plot to overthrow western imposed pseudo democracy.
Imo western commercial interests combined with ill advised and planned regional border remarking exaserbated an already totally misunderstood knowledge of tribal and nomadic peoples.
I fear the west must butt out and leave the region to its own devises to avoid more innocent bloodshed than will unfortunately be spilled until the arabs sort out their own cultural mess.

The saber rattlers in our Congress and Senate want to send troops in and start bombing. Not them personally of course, except maybe crazy John McCain, he's still suffering the emotional trauma of being shot down and captured. Never got over that embarrassment and wants revenge.
I am glad, at this point at least, we have a President who doesn't see War as the solution to civilization's problems.
