I dont think it requires any great skill/talent to generate a long thread.
But what difference does it make, if its pages of posters attacking one another?

Some posters are deliberately controversial to ensure they get lots of attention. Perhaps they are just lonely Sylvia?
Some threads get hijacked and end up talking about a completely different subject from what the original poster was talking about. It can be frustrating when you want to see responses to the original post, but then the thread ose off in a different direction.
