I remember when we had to hide the chess set on Tuesday night before anyone arrived for the bookstudy. My father would sit in his rocking chair underling the Babylon Has Fallen book and say something like..... "We do not want the brothers thinking that we rejoice over war and killing" So we would fantically hide the chess set in the basement along with the Lucky Charms cereal and the cat food that had blood as an ingredient.

They knew that they could effectively control the rank and file by turning them against one another in such 'trivial' matters. The reverberations throughout the congregations on these trivial matters were not trivial at all. It affected families, parents, children, marriages and caused needless anxiety, depression, and anger. Elders were routinely getting involved in these matters and many were 'marked' or shunned or reproved for these conscience matters. "Privileges' were withheld because of them. The Dark Lords knew exactly what they were doing. They knew of the harm they were causing and couldn't care less.
Control and power are all they care about.

In 1973 it was big news in the world at large, chess that is, because of Bobby Fischer's success as a US player beating the Russians. It became quite a sensation with many non-jws playing more chess and jws. I remember people playing it a witness parties and some brothers were quite competitive (as they were with other things). After the 1973 hubbub died down and the initial fascination went away, the elders in this area stopped talking about it being bad. It is similar to the jws in this area playing for small sums of money and keeping score at a baseball or basketball game...they twist the rules to suit themselves.
