THE CURRENT FADING OF BRAND NAME "THE WATCHTOWER"

In late 1969 while I was still serving in Federal Prison with 40 other hapless Jehovah's Witnesses,

an occasion arose in which one of the Brothers began using prison slang.

In Seagoville Federal Correctional Institution, the officers (hacks) referred to us as JW's, so some of the

Brothers also began using the abbreviation (it is catchy sounding.)

Once a month, we received a visit from an outside Congregation Overseer (called a Presiding Elder in modern times).

    His name was Bourgeoisie.

Brother Bourgeoisie called a SPECIAL MEETING to counsel us about a bad, bad thing.

He said (can't prove it really happened) he had written the Society about whether it was okay or not to refer to ourselves

    as JW's.

According to Bourgeoisie, the Society wrote him back and told him it was NOT okay.

    Why?

By delimiting JEHOVAH's name to merely initials, we were following in the footsteps of "superstitious Jews" who

historically reduced JEHOVAH'S NAME to the tetragrammaton.

JW should not, could not and must not be used by Jehovah's Witnesses. We needed to correct anybody we heard

    using the phrase, too.

So, we've come a long way, haven't we?

I can see it now - just like there is "ESPN The Magazine", by 2020 "The Watchtower" will become "JW.Org The Magazine".

Yet when Rutherford first introduced "their" new name in 1931 at a convention (held where in the USA?), he apparently instructed the brothers to install large signs throughout the auditorium with the emblazoned initials "JW" - before the announcement that they stood for the then new name, "Jehovah's Witnesses", those in attendance were noted to wonder what on earth the initials stood for. I recall reading in one of the Watch Tower publications that some wondered whether it meant "Just Wait".

Ironic how things go full circle: My maternal grandfather chided anyone who referred to us as JWs - even householders - he was a blunt man, if ever there was one. Now, it's become trendy. Meanwhile, 80 plus years later, the Witnesses are still 'just waiting'.....

Good topic Steve2 and your posts are excellent. As far as I'm concerned, keeping this subject out in front is of the utmost importance. We can't let this sneaky religious corporation get away with trying to cover their bloodguilt by changing their identity.

Recently I wrote an article about the "rebranding" that Watchtower leaders are determined to do. The title is:

    What's in a Name

    http://watchtowerdocuments.org/whats-in-a-name/#more-2264

In one part of the article I wrote this as food for thought:

"Although the Watchtower organization proclaims its existence with a huge sign installed on the roof of their office building located at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge on the Brooklyn side that literally can be seen across the East River from Wall Street, the words, “Jehovah’s Witnesses,” which would identify the place as their world headquarters, can not be found.

Why is “WATCHTOWER” the only name found on top of the building anyway? Isn’t that odd in light of the fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses claim near and far that only they are “proclaiming Jehovah’s name.” Wouldn’t the sign on the roof of Jehovah’s Witnesses headquarters, known as The Watchtower, be the perfect place to advertise the name “Jehovah”?"

Near the end of the article, I discussed Watchtower's venture into the world of e-relgions which they named JW.Org:

    "Identity Change

As far as I’m concerned, today’s Watchtower leaders are going through a CIC, or "Cult Identity Crisis." My use of the word “cult” in this instance is according to the following definition:

“…an ideological organization held together by charismatic relationships and demanding total commitment.” (Zablocki, 1997). This definition is compatible with some definitions of new religious movements, but cult can also refer to nonreligious organizations. As defined here, cults are at risk of abusing members, but do not necessarily do so.”5

"With the Internet more and more accessible everywhere and the strange history of the Watchtower and of Jehovah’s Witnesses doctrinal flip-flops are readily available, many members are bailing. Recruitment of new members is down. Consequently, the Watchtower is having a CIC panic attack which is not going away but getting more intense with the result that this cult is changing its identity by rebranding itself as an “e-religion” named JW.Org.

"This conversion of Jehovah’s Witnesses carefully cultivated door-to-door image to an important educational e-religion in the minds of the members reminds me of the old story of the emperor wearing new clothes. The emperor was convinced by his weavers that he had on new, extraordinary clothes which they made for him, but in reality he was naked. One aspect of the moral of this story is, “don’t believe everything you’re told by those who seek gain.

"Watchtower is still Watchtower, whatever name is used to push their interests forward. Watchtower members are being misled by the so-called “New Light” that Watchtower leaders claim is “progressively” shining only on their Governing Body. To continue to delude the Witnesses, Watchtower leaders are giving their old failed apocalyptic doctrines a modern look and feel. But nothing has changed – it’s still the same old-time apocalyptic religion using a new way to dispense old fables."

AndersonsInfo - "But nothing has changed – it’s still the same old-time apocalyptic religion..."

    Important to remember.

Some people have suggested that all the different things that have been going on suggest positive reform, but as far as I'm concerned, it's all window dressing.

The WTS crossed the authoritarian-high-control-group Rubicon a long time ago, and burned that bridge behind them.

Authentic progressive reform just isn't possible anymore.

Thanks Barbara. You raise such good questions about the huge signage in Brooklyn in which the brand name "The Watchtower" predominated. I agree with your comments about the current CIC: My grandparents who all died between 1972 and 1981 would simply not recognize the organization if they saw it today - and I can imagine my maternal grandfather loudly condeming its dumbed-down superficiality. He gave me a strong appreciation of studying "the deeper things" when I was very young because he knew I loved to read and think. Nowadays, the paint-by-numbers literature is an embarrassment to anyone with even just a few active brain cells.

Like you and Vidiot, I see none of the re-branding changes as positive; it is all about impression management. The fox is simply becoming craftier.

Rutherford invented the name "Jehovah's Witnesses" to distance (rebrand) the religion from C.T. Russell, the 'Russellites' and the International Bible Students. Rutherford also implemented the 'no beards' policy in Bethel to remove any visible association with the 'old' guys. Out went the 'Cross and Crown' as well...

The 21st century Governing Body wants to distance the religion from the 'Watchtower' and it's negative past, it's faulty chronology and it's absurd prophetic applications. No longer will any JW use the phrase "look it up in the Watchtower Library" - that will be old light.

These changes might seem like a new coat of paint (over rotten wood) to us.

But...to the faithful it is seen as evidence of Jehovah's chariot in action.

"Researchers" is a somewhat nebulous term these days. Every one is a researcher, like everyone is a journalist ( blogger..LOL!!). Going to JW.Borg and calling yourself a researcher, is like reading "Divine Plan of the Ages" and claiming to be an archaeologist.

I googled " truck-stop midgets", does that make me a researcher?!?!
