Writing campaign to Washington DC papers in view of International Convention

I’ve heard from a credible source that the Landover (DC) international convention is important to the Society in view of the 100 year anniversary of "Kingdom rule" and the location being near the capital of the "seventh world power". Perhaps they hope this particular international sends a message.

We know that come convention time usually there is some feel good fluff piece in the newspapers about the Watchtower religion. These articles mostly ignore the dark underside and concentrate only on the whitewashed facade the PR people want people to see.

However, I wonder if we should have an email or letter writing campaign toward the papers and other news outlets in that area. It would be great if such an effort led to telling the other side of the story and balanced the articles and reports that appear in August.

Let's do it! How do you suggest we get started?

It would be a good idea if you could exclude the kooks. Look at the replies that get posted online in various discussions (even here occasionally). Often they are the thoughts of a bunch of kooks that can't spell (evidently even with spellcheck), have poor grammar, and make ludicrous accusations, and make the WTS description of apostates look accurate.

But what the hell. Go for it.

I wish I knew. I don't have the wisdom or experience for this.

Doc brings up a good point.

This is a good example where a newspaper article had input from both sides of the story. We need to ensure this happens more often.

I know AAWA was sending out press releases so maybe someone who handled that would know. This is the DC we would have been assigned to, so relieved I never have to sit through that ever again.

BTW...the dates for this convention are August 1 thru 3.

Based on their past work, I cringe. The WT will look good when they are finished. Letters to the editor should be a few paragraphs. The New York Times wants letter that bring out viewpoint that would not ordinarily be presented by the Times. When I write for such a purpose, I write in handwriting on a legal pad. Word is a good place to edit it. Major newspapers will not publish letters of hate for the WT.

I don't ever see a convention or assembly covered in a NY paper. It is hardly news. When I was little, I thought the Daily News was covering the convention in great detail. My brother and I had our photos in the paper. I was very impressed. Now I realize it was a faux newspaper to sell to the tourists at the convention.

Perhaps asking what the WT policy concerning pedophilia was. I asked a question concerning gay rights that was published in the NY Episcopal newspaper. Of course, it is a totally different mindset.

The editors will fix any grammatical mistakes.

Definitely ‘letters of hate’ would not be what we were going for. If one kept to a few points, such as shunning of family or the handling of child abuse, or blood, it would not appear like a rant.
