Is your laptop resting flat on a nonporous surface? If so, the laptop may be overheating. The battery is in close proximity to the touchpad on some models and when the laptop/battery overheats (from lack of ventilation) the touchpad goes nuts.

Try raising the laptop with something, even if it's just tilting the laptop by resting the front part on some object. I use the box from a printer cartridge!

I had this problem on my Dell laptop, it was driving me crazy. One of the suggestions was to download a free program called touchfreeze. Fixed the problem.

Yah DUH the laptop does not come with a mouse. But you can get one. I accidentally brush my touchpad too. The mouse solves that.

Thank you, dear friends, for practical advice as well as for technical direction.

As best as I can figure so far, it seems I was inadvertently hitting the touchpad. I do have a mouse plugged into a USB port. When I use the optional external keyboard, this doesn't happen because my hands are nowhere near the touchpad. I'm away so left the keyboard at home. Putting 2 and 2 together . . .

Will report back later. BTW, there was lots of info on "jumping cursor," but I had some difficulty figuring out the steps to remedy the problem.

Yes, it is called a "cursor" for obvious reasons! @*%!$&@(#_$!

    Gratefully,
