Ding, you have to possess a certain minimum level of intelligence to "get" irony. Dull-minded, concrete thinkers wouldn 't get irony even if it was brazenly paraded right in front of their glazed over eyes.

I would explain this as less of an irony and more of a "sunk cost" fallacy. The Society's higher-ups have dug in their heels for the long run and will not let their faith be weakened by any amount of delay in Armageddon coming.
