"If the world feels like a more violent place than it actually is, that's because there's more information about wars -- not more wars themselves." Overall, we're in the midst of an unheard of "long peace," as no major powers have clashed since World War II. - Professor Joshua Goldstein

"maybe I was in a bad mood because the wife didn't give me my kiss ...." - jam

I can totally relate to that sentiment. Over ten years married and I'm still a complete sap when it comes to my hubby. I got my kiss this morning!

cofty: I felt that way around the 60's and 70's but I was only

aware of the progress we were making here in the US and

the problems that only effected the JW's.

I would love to share your optimism.

MadGiant: That's the point "8 percent of recorded history with out

some type of conflict". Since I was born, the end of WW2, Korea conflict,

Panama, Cuba, Russia had me hiding under my school desk for years,

Vietnam and the conflicts in the east.

We as humans are incapable of Peace, it is not in our DNA....

Also, consider that we portion out conflict, violence "per 100,000" people. We've got a lot more people. The number of conflicts may go up, but proportionally it affects far fewer of us. Consider the biblical accounts of entire cities wiped out; women, children, everybody. We call that genocide today. Nowadays a single mis-fired missle makes headline news. We used to call that collateral damage.

We used to watch people being hung-drawn-and-quartered for trival offenses and find it entertaining.

We used to beat children and buy and sell slaves and torture "witches".

We are getting better and better every decade. When humans disgust you try to remember how far we have come.

I agree with you folks, there are less people killed in

conflicts today. Looking at figures on deaths in WW2 and WW1

the numbers are mind blowing compared to later conflicts...

It worries me that as scientific progress continues more and more nations will get access to nuclear weapons. It's true the world is better than in past centuries but in most of those we didn't have the ability to wipe out that same world.

War sucks ick. All the icks, in fact. It cuts lives short, tears whole families apart, and it always seems to bring out the absolute worst in humanity. And it's being happening for a very, very long time.

I didn't pointed the 8% to get you depressed. I mentioned it because war is something that's being happening "forever". And I don't think it will change. While some scholars see warfare as an inescapable and integral aspect of human nature, others argue that it is only inevitable under certain socio-cultural or ecological circumstances which, in my opinion, means is human nature. Common causes of war conflicts are competition for resources, religion, unification/autonomy.

We are humans, If we see something that we like/need, we are going to ask for it nicely. If others comply, everything will be fine. If others don't comply, we will take it, by any means.

But it's not just us, chimpanzee go to war for some of the same reasons we do.
