The cyclist death is a tragedy. How ironic would it be if they disfellowshipped a guy who was returning from a theocratic activity. He would probably conclude that it was better if he had not went. I'm sure that what his family is wishing.
The sentence reflects that the Judge felt he was guilty and that the death of the cyclist could have been avoided. If he was using his mobile whilst driving that is a serious offence in the UK.
Whatever his religious persuasion some young man lost his life and both families have to cope with this loss. One however also carries the guilt of taking a human life.
