    I went up to both of them and asked if they wanted to help..which they politely declined.
    That about sums up the wt position. Of course, it doesn't apply to all jws, sad for them. Jws who broke rank and jumped in to help would suffer a serious 'frowning on'. Thanks for sharing your experience. The salvation army does innumerable good deads for people in trouble.

    LeslieV,

    Thank you for sharing your exp. with us. We also went to Ground Zero, esp. being a former Bethelite and JW, it was something to behold. I was ashamed that the JW's were not more available than just to offer some tracts and some magazines to later use as seat coverings.

    Thank you for your work as a member of the Salvation Army. The love and compassion displayed exemplified the love Jesus taught us.... obviously not displayed by those elders. Why couldn't WT send some 100 strong bethelites to help remove debris for a week, where is the love?

    I agree that the WT could have done something practical for the survivors and the recovery workers at the WTC site. Especially since they "preach how practical the Bible is in everyday life." However it wouldn't be possible for 100 bethelites or anyone else to volunteer to remove debris. There are unions in NYC and nothing moves without them. Perhaps offering food and shelter to persons displaced by the tragic event would have been welcomed but, it would be unrealistic to think they would have allowed civilians to volunteer with debris removal.

    There were other groups and individuals offering such assistance but not the WT! You are correct where is the love?

    LOL... Priceless

    I think so many Witnesses would like to see their "ministry" rounded out with some genuine charity in the form of practical works that actually help people. I think it is a shame the WT did such a half-assed job of failing to pull their weight in a tragedy in brooklyn's backyard.

    Dear Imbue;
    You are correct that only trained individuals could go and remove debris. The iron workers, firefighters, and police.

    When I asked the elders if they wanted to help, I was referring to helping me bring down into the pit some water and pop for the workers. That is what they politely refused. Of course, they had on their elder uniforms hahahha. I am sure they were afraid they would get dirty although you got dirty just standing where I was.

    All of you that praised the Salvation Army are correct. What they do for people is just amazing. The Salvation Army does not care what religion you are, ethnicity, sexual orientation etc. All they care is that they are there to help in anyway they can. Working for them is a privilege. I might not be involved in their religion but I certainly belive they have true love for mankind.

    Here is the official spin...

    In the months that followed, the brothers in the New York area took the Bible’s message of comfort and hope to those in the community. Several brothers were allowed to minister at Ground Zero, the site where the Twin Towers collapsed. One of these brothers was Roy Klingsporn, a pioneer. He said: “With appreciation, an air force sergeant who was involved with the relief work said: ‘Everyone brings us food, hot coffee, and dry clothes, but you are the first to read a scripture. We need God at a time like this.’”.....yearbook 2003

    Witnesses

    The first two days of the disaster, about 70 people sought refuge at the world headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Some who had lost their hotel rooms and luggage were given a place to stay and replacement clothing. They were fed. Perhaps more important, they were given emotional support by experienced Christian elders.

    Jehovah’s Witnesses also sent needed emergency equipment and supplies for the search-and-rescue crews working at what came to be called Ground Zero. Transportation was also made available to the fire department to get fire fighters to the rescue area. Ricardo (at right, top), a 39-year-old Witness and sanitation worker, was involved, along with hundreds of others, in removing tons of debris day after day. He told Awake!: “The sights were very stressful, especially for fire fighters, who were looking for their lost comrades. I saw them pull out one fireman alive. Another fireman had been killed by a falling body. Many firemen were weeping. I broke down and cried. On that day nobody was more courageous than they were.”....Awake! 1/8/2002
