I suppose his intention was not to imply that the woman is expecting a beating if her husband is displeased with his meal, but just that she's eager to please him. It's still a painfully embarrassingly antiquated analogy (in fact I'm not sure it was ever true except maybe when it was the very first meal a newlywed was making for her husband in a heavily male-dominated culture). Furthermore, in the scenario where it's God "coming home", we very much should be afraid if he's displeased with us because he's promised to smite us if that's the case!
