Video Game Systems. Which is better? Help!

PS2 has more and better games.

XBox has superior technology, so better long-term prospects. And, it does have some real gems.

I'm not sure how many games on either of those platforms are appropriate for 10-year old girls, though.

Gamecube is more of a 'kids' system - Nintendo generally does 'kid-friendly' games (you'll never see Nintendo do a 'Grand Theft Auto' ) Plus, it's cheaper.

However, if you are typing on a message board, you obviously have a PC. Why are you looking at a counsel?

PC games are better, more immersive, and the multiplayer components of them allow for much more interaction. (Yeah, I know many of the counsels are moving to internet multiplayer, but none have it implemented yet - and I just can't imagine a game like Everquest ever being ported to a counsel!)

Not to mention - if you pick carefully - PC games can be a healthy combination of educational and fun.

Playstation 2. $199 Plays, DVD, CD, Playstation 2, Playstation 1 games.

Xbox has heating problems. Every analysis that I've read says that Microsoft is going to take a beating on the Xbox. I don't think that they are going to make it.

Playstation 2 has a ton more games. I HIGHLY recommend Jak and Daxter! Very good for kids too.

Yeah, but you didn't address my fundamental complaint: PCs are just better.

Might be a little bit more (seriously, though, not much even for a really good one), but you get a tool they can use for years that also has all the 'toy' appeal of a console (sorry, was spelling wrong before, too early in the morning....).

And, since she obviously already HAS a pc, it's just a matter of upgrading it to play the latest games, which is even cheaper.

Anyone seen the screenshots of Doom III? Not a kids game, for sure, but sorry, nothing ever available on ANY console system will be able to even touch those graphics.

It took a long time, but PCs are now even faster than consoles at games. Let alone their utility for work and other forms of entertainment. (Hey, PCs can play DVDs and CDs, too, you know! And, actually, Playstation games as well - remember Bleem?)

    Doom III looks incredible!

Doom and Doom II are responsible for the black spot I have between 1992 and 1995.

I can't even put my fingers in the keyboard position for that game anymore without my wrists cramping up.

    Hi Andee!

My fiance has been working in the video/computer game industry for 8 years now (3-D digital artist) so I asked him what he thought about your question.

He gave me a 30 minute analysis of stuff - I'd write it out if I had a clue - but it sounded a lot like what Simon and Slip had to say. Especially Slippy's comments about Microsoft taking a bath on X-box... He mentioned how Sega (SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ROCKS FOREVER) could not compete with Sony, and stopped making consoles, for example.

Most Game developers/producers/publishers actually make games specifically designed for the PS2. Then, if the market demand is sufficient, they format (?) the games for the other platforms. He's actually working on such a project right now - making a racing game made for PS2 compatible with the other platforms. The result is that the games CAN be played on the other platforms, but can not utilize the superior technologies of them. (They'd have to completely re-make the game, which few publishers want to pay for when they can just sell it as is.)

You guys should see his shop... they've got fire-wire somethings and every artist has EACH platform console at their desk... they can import what they're working on at the moment directly onto an existing game to see how it flies... and the "hello kitty" christmas lights around the place really make it all very balanced.

Quick summary Andee: he said get the PS2!

Well, thank you all for your input!

At least now I think I have a starting point. Plus, I just realized that I can always go rent the systems down at Blockbuster for a few days and check them out. However, I really hate the thought of the big deposits they want me to put up. I know, I will get them back. Still, it irks me.

I am thinking long term. Plus, I have a son who will be 6 next month. So, I know he will be playing too. Yes, my spouse and I are concerned about what type of games that will be played. We will not allow anything with what we consider to be excessively violent or with "mature" content.

I haven't ruled out the Game Cube. I had just heard only negative things about it. However, I haven't checked it out myself.

We do have a few PC games for hubby. And I just had my computer recently upgraded. However, the kids are fighting over it enough as it is. And now I find I have to fight THEM to use the darn thing. It's in constant use now. I can't imagine adding more games to it. Then, there's hubby. So, unless I want have my sister build me another PC, I think buying a video game system would be the best option for us. At least it would be for my nerves..lol

    Again, thank you.

    Thanks Lauralisa!

PS2 seems to be getting the nod on this thread. However, I will consider all.

    *grumbles in the back*

I'd say, get another PC. Kids'll be fighting with you over your PC again in a few years when it comes time to do homework and their shiny (not quite so new) consoles can't do word processing, surf the net, display multimedia encyclopedias, or do programming (most high schools in our area teach at least BASIC now!)

If you've got a sister who builds PCs, I'd say you're set. Buying parts from vendors on pricewatch.com will get you incredible discounts (*ALWAYS* buy computer parts online - the cost a brick & mortar stores absorbs for stocking the parts and constantly upgrading it passed right on to you). If you have someone who can buy them and put them together for you....well, a console has no competition to a well-built PC.

    (I'd recommend an AthlonXP system + Shuttle AK31 v3.1 mobo + 512MB PC2400, etc.)

Slippy's comments about Microsoft taking a bath on X-box

Everyone 'takes a bath' on their consoles. Each and every one of them is sold at a *considerable* loss to their manufacturer. Why do it, then? Well, have you noticed how much console games cost? And how many such hideously overpriced games does the typical consumer own per console?

    Yeah. That's why.
