Given your knowledge of basic physics (despite having a physics degree), I think you should. I've instilled in them a respect for the elder generation, they will feel terrible taking your job and it's all your fault for not being better at knowing things. I would have hoped you could mentor them, turns out they'll be taking your office.
I'm assuming you ever rated an office. Apologies if you'll be reporting to them from your cubicle and an office was just a wet dream for you.

Your problem is that you are REALLY good at math. Not so good at physics. Seriously, a hobbyist astronomer knew more than a physicist about physics?
You clearly can do the math to figure out most problems, but you clearly cannot fiure out why the problems exists in the first place. That's literally the first thing I teach my children. Forget HOW to solve it, let's first understand even what the problem is.
You, as a physicist, spent several paged arguing about something only to end up proving exact what a hobbyist said and then deciding to start arguing about well-defined terms and whether or not they mean what they clearly mean only to then start lobbing insults.
You should look at a different line of work. Clearly, defending your ideas in a rational and structured approach isn't for you.
