i really think if the whole of the uk had been given the vote--it would be an overwhelming yes. most south of the border think english taxpayers get the bad bit of the deal--and would be better off if scotland were independant. what would our scottish neighbours think then ?
i'm sure the welsh are watching closely.
I'm mostly expecting a yes vote, which I can't help feeling is almost a call for the lost romance.
in my opinion it's a big mistake.
Although I appreciate the desire for a sovereign state and political autonomy, the financial implications on a global scale will be palpable. The impact of Scottish independence will probably destabilize the euro to some degree and would add more fervor to the Catalan Independence movement going on now in Spain. If it happens, the US dollar and British pound will probably experience a significant bounce as euro holders go to more stable currency, but the global financial markets will probably get wacky...

This is interesting. As an American who lived through the War of Independence (ok, not really, but I do remember the centennial) I learned that having ones voice heard really does matter to people and when they feel that is not respected, it causes problems. Having seen the results of NO repreresentation (for real) while living in the MENA region, I am speaking with actual first hand experience of the climate it produces. I think a nice referendum is a cool way to solve the issue-it's very civilized.
A representative government is important. If Scots felt they were truly being represented, I doubt it would have come to this. If the referendum does not go through, then I hope that the govt of the UK will make the changes that it needs to so that there are no second class kingdoms in the UK. There is a root problem at issue. Address it and fix it. Now, isn't that easy? (Ok, nothing is, but wouldn't it be nice if it WERE that simple??)
No matter what happens, I hope it is good for everyone ultimately.

Cofty, once again you have nailed it. The smug nationalism, the intimidation of many of the "yes" campaigners makes my hair stand on end. I really think that nationalism is the most divisive and dangerous emotion. I don't believe that the term social justice is anything more than an ear tickling platitude.

Scotland is not a region or state but a country in its own right.
I am not an snp or salmond fan, but democracy to enable a country to strive to look after its own affairs is a worthy goal.
Who would disagree?

galaxie - social justice does not depend on independence. The unique benefits Scotland enjoys now is paid for from central UK funds.

Cofty..I agree social justice does not depend on independence, its down to whether one believes that democracy for deciding your own governance can bring about a fairer society.
As a more socialist leaning country I believe we stand a better chance not withstanding it will take courage and time to build.
Nothing great and worthwhile for humanity was ever achieved by complacency.
I believe the snp will eventually fragment and that the socially concious people of Scotland will vote for better government than the status quo.
