    No, I'm English, Lancashire.

The amazing thing about the British empire is not just how bit and influential it was but how it was dismantled in such an orderly fashion. It seems like any country who asked to be independent was granted independence but those who rebelled were battled. Strange. Few empires have ever retreated in such an orderly way which is probably why Britain, now less influential, still gets to be part of the common-wealth.

People who stood up to the empire like Ghandi were held in high regard and he could not have taken the stand he did in the manner he did against other leaderships.

It will be sad if the home countries break apart but I don't think it's going to happen this week at least.

Re: the ruling of Iindia specifically - look at India before and after British rule. Was it better or worse? Yes - there will always be bad events but to imagine the populace was better before the British took over is to avoid looking too closely at India as it was before they arrived.

No Scottish blood in my veins, Berengaria. Only stolid English midlands blood, plus rebellious Irish blood hating the English and quite possibly a dash or three of a still darker blood, the secretive blood known when a man decided to take as ostensible housekeeper a young aboriginal girl and enjoy what used to be known as enjoying some black velvet in the night, then kick her out of the bed, and send her back to her humpy (sour grin)

Well I have been an Anglophile since I could read, and a lover of the Scots since I read Nigel Tranter years ago and many others since. In the modern world, I can't even imagine the idea of "secession". It seems a bit romantic.

Not to mention, that I am FINALLY going to the UK next year, and wondering about what might change re money, rail/transport, etc.

After the 'no' vote wins the English should have a referendum to decide if they want to keep Scotland.

Well common sence prevailed and the NO vote won.

If the YES vote had won you can guarantee the Welsh would have been next.

On second thought they might still try.

I have just seen the news and seems the no vote has won 54 % to 46 %.

I have no Scottish blood in my veins that I know of but some of my relatives are Jordies and live on the border. my other ancestors are english and welsh. As a result I have no dogmatic opinions except I believe the Scots should think clearly about something so important.

A democratic decision which we all must abide by.

I'm still licking my wounds, but I'm sure the total votes yes and no show there is a need for change.

Hopefully the last minute ' vow ' by the 3 main uk parties will bring better prospects to all in the UK.

They will be held to account if they renage.

    Best wishes to all.

Landslide to No - predictably it wasn't even close - the UK politicians who pushed the panic button based on media misrepresentations about it being close are looking pretty silly. The non-Scottish in the UK will be asking why it was necessary to offer additionally sweeteners to the generous subsidies the Scots already get.
