A distrust of authority I've always felt is healthy and should be encouraged.

I had a lot of difficulty with authority after I exited. I do know part of that has to do with the cult.

It's not bad to loathe authority. It's human nature, I think. In fact, in an ideal society, no one would impose authority to anyone, so yes, it is a perfectly healthy sign to detest authority. Escpecially authority of the strong upon the weak, or the minority upon the majority.

The only people who need "authority," IMHO, are out-of-control people, mostly teenagers. Office holders and emergency personnel alike are there to look out for the best interests of the people, not to be arrogant and heavy handed.
When I was growing up, I lived with my grandparents until I was 11. They were not authoritarian, and I came to understand that their "rules" were put in place to protect me from harm, not to let me know who's boss. Then I had to go live with my sperm donor and egg donor, who were just the opposite. I still have issues about them.
I am now my own authority, and I usually know what is appropriate and inappropriate without consulting anyone. If I do consult anyone, it won't be someone with "authority."

It's a good thing to challenge authority. Make them explain their decisions, disobey if it's important to do so. I don't know whether I feel this way because I'm a child of the 60s, or because of being raised JW, or because I think it's a sane, rational way to live.
I remember pissing off a boyfriend who didn't like my asking "why" to every command he issued. I'm just not going to do things because I'm told to do them. I need a reason and it has to be a damn good reason and I have to agree.

I accept that to enjoy relative freedoms within a democracy we need authorities.
But I hate it when people abuse their relative authority.
Sometimes it's the ones with the least authority that can be the worst abusers of it.
There's no tyranny like petty tyranny.

The funny thing about many people's attitudes towards authority figures is what happens when they either become one or make friends with one.

Apog,
What are you talking about?
Behavior of a friend in authority may only tell us about that individual.
Becoming a person in authority may simply show us the slippery slope that can come with having authority.
What do you mean?
