I kind of wanted to know if some have made this transition from escaping the Satellite/Cable monopoly to the large antenaes that require no monthly bills. Does it work? Is there a good quality such as Hi Def? How many channels do you get, and are there ways to replace the PVR?

I live on the peninsula in the HR area of Virginia and we have a good number of local stations broadcasting in the area. For us, rabbit ears are adequate for our televisions and we get a good number of channels. Some are high def, mainly the mainstream networks like cbs and nbc. They are either clear when the signal is fair to good or glitchy (like a scratched dvd) when the signal is poor.

We made the jump several years ago. We pay for netflix and Hulu plus. (9$) per month each. We also have an antenna. Saves us a lot of MoneY. Wes till pay around 40$ per month for internet as well.

we live in rural Southern Illinois and we have an antenna. Buy the biggest antenna you can, put on a rotor, and buy a standalone Tivo. You'll get plenty of free TV and save a small fortune every month.

We live in southern Ontario and we have always had antennaes. This last antennae is screwed into the chimmney, yeah, no more getting me to go outside and wait to be yelled at as I am turning it around until the picture comes in.LOL. Hated when the converter box would burn out or the antennae wouldn't turn anymore and one of you have to go outside and turn it. Guess who had to go outside and turn the stupid thing. He gets really excited when a pic comes in for I have to be real quick in stopping it. Didn't really care to change the channel for you just knew you would have to go outside again. I would usually high tale it upstairs to bed before the ending of a show. We live out in the country and are surrounded by a forest. Reception can be a problem and then in the winter more so. We get thirteen channels and no bills.

I have an antenna on my roof and get 6 local channels with it. I also have a Free To Air satellite dish up there as well (Ku Band) but I've got a 12" dish I wanna set up since the C-band stuff is better. I have a PC in the living room to record stuff, and I watch Youtube on it as well. I tried the Netflix thing, but there just isn't enough decent stuff on there for my liking, plus I don't watch TV all that often. There's lots of free TV out there if you fork out some cash for the equipment.

I live in a large metropolitan area and each station has more than one digital channel, many have several.
So I have a regular roof antenna and get a few dozen choices. I pay for internet and Netflix, not cable. I also order many things from Amazon, so I have Amazon Prime for free 2-day shipping which also gets me their Prime movies and television downloads.

Most of what people want to watch is talked about and you can find it between Netflix and the internet after it's been out awhile. It's actually better, IMO, to watch a whole season or even the whole series afterward than to wait for each episode like we still do on regular television.

Quarterback not only is there high def; its the best quality HD picture available compared to cable/satellite.

Yes, there are broadcast DVRs on the market. Tivo, Simple.TV, or use any Windows 7 or later PC with TV tuner.

http://www.antennaweb.org/ will guide you to what channels you should be getting as well as direction to aim antenna and what kind you need for your exact location.
