Did it bother you that they taught, "miss a meeting and you'll fall away?"

WASANELDERONCE- It annoyed me more than anything. It was a control manuever, a fear tactic used to make JW's feel they would fall off the ends of the earth into Satan's invisible hands if they stopped or didn't attend meetings regularly. I could kind of see through the BS of it- although years ago in my early to mid 20's when I was indoctrinated - I experienced " guilt " for missing meetings at times. The older I got into my early 40's though - I felt less " guilt " as I was beginning to see through the WT illusions. The WT leaders and elders just try to scare the $hit out of people is all it is. Unfortunately for those still under the influence of WT mind control- the tactic works. Disgusting

The scriptures say not to forsake the gatherings. The Greek word used for forsake here means completely turning one's back on, to disown. Missing meetings here and there is not forsaking them. Also, that scripture says "the gathering of yourselves"; this could also include Christians informally getting together for association and a meal, which early Christians did often.

It`s probably one of the only true things the WBT$ has ever said..

A steady diet of WBT$ Propaganda is the only way to keep JW`s from Thinking..

When you start missing meetings, your mind s-l-o-w-l-y begins to function on its own. This is the single most dangerous scenario for a cult. This is why questions are NOT allowed!!

In the last congregation I attended there were 4 elders who worked on the road. They missed the meetings on Tuesday and Thursday. They said they went to meetings on the road, but that was a lie. I had friends in those areas, and they said they worked on those nights.

One elder took his family to Orlando for 4 weeks in December/January and never went to the meetings, thinking that studying the WT on Sunday could replace that. This was the pattern for 20 years and not a word of counsel to them.

I hated this hypocrisy and every time they or another "righteous" one would complain that someone was missing meetings, I would point out the pattern among the elders in that congregation.

I recall a particular 'MS' who wasn't particularly eloquent, so when he gave public prayers it was pretty much exactly the same wording every time. One of the things he'd say without fail was asking 'Jehovah' to "help the sick ones get back to the meetings". Never "help the sick ones to get better," just get back to the meetings. I can't recall whether this was a stock phrase used by other JWs or just him.

Yes I hated it, not realizing it was often true. One cong I was in was especially fanatical about meeting attendance. I was not allowed to aux pioneer b/c I occasionally missed meetings. I had preschool children who were often sick and a DFed husband at the time. The elder who veto'd my pio request? None other than my own uncle. Encouraging huh? Missing meetings not only interupts the indoctrination but also it's how a person is TREATED when they miss that helps one to wake up.

Data-Dog - "This is why questions are not allowed!!"

    They're not "not allowed".

    They're "discouraged".

    Blondie mentions hypocrisy.

Some elders missed meetings due to work. One was appointed as an elder and couldn't attend the meetings regularly due to his job. My father gave his good paying job up twice in his life so he could attend meetings.

Another relative who was poor gave his job to be able to attend the District Convention.
