Good for you Simon and Angharad
And Happy Birthday Liam
Isn't it wonderful to be able to raise your kids "normal"? Well, as normal as they can be with a dad like Simon.

This side of Eden, whether we realize it or not, we feel the stain on our souls, and at every opportunity, we try to scrub it away with steel-wool guilt.

Aawww... Happy birthday to your son Simon. I love to hear stories like this of families being able to do normal and very special things, like celebrating birthdays, after leaving the borg. I can't wait until I can do this openly again.

Simon, that's wonderful to hear! I bet you can't wait 'till the next one either can you?
Those are some of the best times I've had! My nephew and neices' birthdays, and don't forget about Christmas! I could care less if I get anything or not. It's more of a gift to me to see the kids happy.
Personally, I've grown to love adding some kind of prank-gift at Christmas. Makes it even more fun!
The first Christmas I celebrated with kids, or at all for that matter, was with my adoptive family in '98. That year I bought a few videos for the kids and didn't even wrap them. I just went over on Christmas day with the videos in a paper bag. Told the kids that Santa (they believed in him then) had told me to bring them some socks and underwear and handed them the bag. When I said that, their faces fell and they sadly took the bag. Once they saw what it was and their faces lit up, I then knew what I had missed all those years.
After that, I went full-blast for birthdays, Christmas, you name it. Oh, by the way, setting up everything under the tree on Christmas Eve after the kids are asleep is a joy all it's own!
In '99 I started a prank-gift ritual with my nephew. That year I got him a Playstation. I worked at a muffler shop at the time so I grabbed a Flowmaster Muffler box and put the Playstation in it and gift wrapped it. The next morning he tore the paper off the box, looked at it, gave this "what the hell?" look and tossed it to the side. The next box was the games for the Playstation, and then he figured it out.
The next year, I wrapped up another Flowmaster Muffler box. He tore the paper off, saw the box, and started laughing. "You're not gonna get me with that again, Mike!" Inside was a muffler. The look on his face was priceless. He got a beginner's radio control airplane that year.
Every year, it's gotten to be a little more of a challenge to top the previous.
Last year, his "most wanted" was a Harry Potter Playstation game and I had to get a little more creative.
So Josh got a huge box, gift-wrapped in 3 layers of pink "Barbie" wrapping paper. Inside that were 6 more boxes, open one to get to the next, and each gift-wrapped. Plenty of wrapping paper that would be totally humiliating for an 11-year-old boy. When he FINALLY made it to the last box, inside it was a "Barney and Friends" book. The boy got tears in his eyes. (And yes, I have pictures of the whole thing!) By that time, he wasn't even going to open the book but he did and found the Harry Potter game.Somehow, I'm really nervous about retaliation this year.
Mike.
