Yeah I know what you mean Vi about the not so subtle technique, but if anyone can recall a group being named I'd be interested to read it. The WT has to cover its a*%# against defamation cases...thats why I don't recall any 'naming' of movies or artists. The 'round about' method is as close as they can get to naming someone. But then again I haven't read a WT in such a long time, I'm a bit outta touch.

If I remember correctly, although the Society did name names in the 70s and possibly early 80s, they didn't after that time. They made very broad hints about the topics of some songs, and it wasn't that hard to guess some of the songs they were talking about. I say "some" because I wasn't allowed to listen to hard rock, so that kind of music is foreign to me.

    Edited to clarify:

I am talking about not naming names in the WT & AW mags. The bros did name names in talks etc. But to mention the albums/artists would have been a personal choice of the bros giving those talks.

The funny thing is, I used to work in the summers of my teenage years with an older JW friend. He had a cleaning business; one day we were called in to do some ceramic tile polishing at Axl Rose's house. He had an awesome place in the hills of Malibu, CA, overlooking the ocean.

I was quite proud that I got to meet him, and I think my friend would have been too if Axl hadn't been a jerk to him.

In his kitchen window, he had a sign that said 'Only God loves you. Everyone else thinks you're an asshole', or something to that effect.

I distinctly remember a Sunday talk in the early 90's naming a list of bands that the society considered associated with demons. I can recall a few here:

    GNR (Guns and Roses)
    Montly Crue
    Prince
    Led Zepplen
    Queen
    Aerosmith
    Black Sabbath
    Pink Floyd
    Alice Cooper
    The Doors

That was probably half of the list, I can recall the rest. I remember being shocked because I liked some of the bands mentioned. But, as a good JW, I got rid of all the "demonized" music in my collection. What a joke. I have since re-purchased most of those bands cd's since I left.

I also remember at an assembly around 1993 or 1994, a talk specifically mentioning Green Day, and how they were not music fit for JW's.

Ozzie has often said that the only black magic the Sabbath ever got into was the chocolates. I still remember an elder telling me when I was little that KISS stood for "Kids In Satan's Service".

To be truthful, I have to hide away my CDs and LPs when the Circuit Overseer comes to tea, basically because we are only allowed to listen to Kingdom Melodies, George Benson, Hank Marvin and Don Rendell if we are good little Christians.

I remember a talk at an assembly where "The Grateful Dead" were deemed off limits. And, when I was at Bethel, it was considered a no-no to go to the Hard Rock Cafe in Manhatten. (Of course, many of the Bethelites went anyway, they just did not advertise it.)

The only bands I've heard mentioned off stage are Guns n Roses, Bon Jovi, and Nirvana. ANY rap music is supposed to be bad (the racist bastards) and ANY heavy metal group is bad.

not true! I remember right around the time that Nirvana was the biggest band in the world a brother came down from Brooklyn and gave a talk at Buckingham Assembly hall in Bucks County, PA and from the stage mentioned Nirvana by name and said that no true christian would listen to them. As for putting it into print - you may be right about that.

I also heard in a talk that Guns n Roses is bad because guns = penis and roses = vagina. So Guns n Roses is really just another way of saying sex. duh.
