It's an amazing book, SS. I had to put it down after the Liberty piece. That was several months ago. Now that my own blood pressure has returned to normal, I think I'll finish it.

This guy Bamford wrote another book about the NSA years ago called "The Puzzle Palace." I read that one too. Same kinda stuff, same result to my blood pressure.

People don't realize, I think, how powerful the NSA is. But think about it. Remember when the Russians shot down that Air Korea Flight 007, a 747, in the Kamchatka Sea? Most people didn't catch on, or think about the fact that the US government was playing back the conversation between the Russian MIG and his ground controllers THE NEXT MORNING. Where did this tape come from? The NSA. That's no mean feat recording a specific conversation on the other side of the planet between a Russian fighter and his controller.

And they can listen in on your conversations, too.

    Scary.

Thank you for the detailed reponses, this seems to support the idea that Sharon is the real terrorist in this middle east crisis.

    Dakota Red,

: The 1968 seizure of the USS Pueblo by North Korea brought much more outrage throughout the US than the USS LIberty did.

Bucher moved to the Poway area of San Diego and lived in disgrace. I talked with many sailors who knew him and said he lived with major depression.

I had a chance to visit him and meet him, but I was too busy at the time to do it. I believe he died, but I'm not sure. I certainly remember the "Pueblo" incident, though. From what I remember, Bucher was a scapegoat for the Navy and its "pride."

Geez, I hope they didn't get the one where I was talking down on my boss to my buddy. Or the one where my girlfriend asked me what I'd been up to and I described in detail the cleaning of the house and mowing of the yard.

The fact that I'm paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get me.

It is normal for the military to have their scapegoats. At the end of WWII, the USS Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese Submarine. No one knew about it for days. No one searched and most of the survivors were killed by sharks in the water. This was the ship that delivered the atomic bomb to Tinien(sp?), so it's movements were certainly secretive. But, to lose an entire ship for days and not even know it was overdue in port?

And who took the blame? The ships Captain. He was courtmartialed. They even went so far as to find the Captain of the Submarine to testify that he wasn't zig zagging. He stated that even if he were zig zagging, he was lined up just too perfect and would have sunk the ship anyway. No matter. The Captain was still hung out to dry, after the end of the war.

U.S. History is filled with accounts of scapegoats to appease the public and let the actual guilty ones go free.

My favorite was the tale of a destroyer group grounding itself off of ?San Diego? in bad weather. Story is that the lead destroyer mistimed a turn, and proceeded to run aground. The following destroyers (line astern) followed it and ran aground, except the end destroyer. The captain saw what was happening and stopped his ship.

Lead destroyer captain court martialed (of course), but so was the trailing destroyer captain - for not maintaining formation!

Two admirals, a general and an ambassador are currently demanding that congress investigate the liberty attack. http://www.americanfreepress.net/05_20_02/Admirals_Urge_/admirals_urge_.html
