Do we know for sure what happens after death?

I believe what Solomon said concerning death at Eccl 9:5, 10. Death is inactivity, lifelessness. There is no going to heaven or an eternal hellfire at death.

The first man (you can call him Adam if you want) existed in two states: (1) As a dead soul and (2) as a living soul. So even in the death (dead soul) state Adam existed, but as a dead and lifeless person.

It was not until God blew into Adams nostrils the "breath of life" did Adam become a "living" soul.

So when a person dies it is the opposite: The breath of life exits the body and the person returns to be a "dead soul" (dead). (Gen 2:7)

In the dead soul state (and there are billions of persons in this state literally), all persons can have that "breath of life" reinserted back into them. This is the promised resurrection of ALL of mankind at John 5:28-29)

One must think: Jesus' friend Lazarus died. When Jesus resurrected him Lazarus did not report being in heaven or in a fiery hell. Why? Because he was dead. There is no consciousness of anything in the dead soul state.

Persons today claiming that they have died and came back to life and saw a white light are either lying or they did not really die. The world today is replete with liars. Such is a feature of this world as the "god of this world" (Satan) is a liar and the father of the lie. (John 8:44 and 2 Cor 4:4)

Yondaime Good post; let us make a try WITHOUT the help of religions!

What we perceive with our senses is relative reality. And relative reality presupposes the existence of the absolute. If one insists that he will go only till his senses go, then he is in for trouble—because if he happens to be in front of a person whose senses are not functional, the very existence of the former will be questioned! That means we need to go beyond senses!

We are able to see objects and other externalities because of our visual perceptive apparatus that has the attribute called as persistence of vision. A motion picture is made up of a series of still pictures. When each of these still pictures is followed by another in less than a sixth of a second, the brain interprets the sequence as a continuum. And so we see the sequence of images as a motion picture without realising that what we think we see is just an illusion, a perception. The continuum is implied. The continuum is enabled by a programme of the neurological apparatus. And we are actually deceived by “virtual reality”. Each individual and his constituents are all the while in a state of change. Even the skeletal system that we believe to be hard and which forms the infrastructure of the body is constantly being remodelled. Absorption and reformation of the bones are a continuous process. So, when we all are constantly being reformed as it were, the perception of our own continuity is a mere hallucination.

Change is the only certainty. We all are constantly changing and so is the environment. So any perceived continuity or seeming constancy is just an illusion of our perception. If we wake up to the fact that every aspect of existence is in a constant flux, then the question that automatically arises is “What is unchangeable, permanent and eternal?”

The constancy is in the perceiver; it is in the act of observing. All creation is comprised of three distinct entities: the perceiver, the perceived and the act of perception. All are manifestations of the same universal consciousness. The perceived is all the while in a state of flux and change. So the perceiver is the only constant in this apparent variable equation of creation. What is perceived all the while is changing.

Out of the infinite possibilities, when the observer observes an event, then, all the other waves of possible events are squashed. Till the observer observes, all events are in a state of being possible. All perception is centred on awareness. To any observer, the universe exists only till the observer exists. The continuum of existence is only a mirage. We are not the same entity at two discrete points in time. We as well as the environment are continuously changing and any continuity is just an illusion of the perceptive apparatus. In deep sleep, there is a period of non-perception of the outer world. On waking, this world reappears and the show goes on. Despite non-perception of the external world there does remain a certain am-ness, that is aware and says that i slept well. That awareness is the witness and the unchangeable and permanent entity, the immortal spirit. How the observer spirit is to the body (micro world), so is THE OBSERVER SUPREME SPIRIT to the universe (macro world). Hence Don't worry about what is after death--that tomorrow will take care of its own surprises. In other words, what is needed is to learn from the past, and enjoy the present. Future will take care of itself!

If you have this understanding, all your actions will naturally become that of caring and compassionate to yourself and to those around you--which will make your life more meaningful and enjoyable.

    Sending you good wishes!

How come no one asks, "Is there life before birth?"

I don't remember being around before I was born. Chances are I'm not going to be around after I die.

Personally, I like the Quran version of getting 72 virgins. Nothing like the promise of tons of Sex (maybe even group sex?) In the afterlife. Now that's a religion! 👌😉

In reality. All we know for sure in this life is our brain dies and so do our thoughts.

Coded Logic Good question! I can attempt to point the direction I have taken.

Death is a universal occurrence; yet it is the least understood phenomenon. According to early writings of Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein (Austrian-British philosopher), this is because death is not an event in one’s life; we do not live to experience death. He upheld that at death the world does not alter, but comes to an end. However, he added, our life has no end in just the same way in which our visual field has no limits. After death, life becomes unmanifest.

It is the soul that enlivens, galvanises, moves and directs the body, mind and senses. Every soul is a circle without circumference. The centre of the circle is body. Death means change of this centre from body to body. Death is the separation of soul from body. Body is destructible and belongs to the indestructible soul. Hence it follows: Death destroys the personality but it cannot annihilate individuality because individuality is separate and has distinct existence beyond body with no relation to personality.

Man clings to this earthly life. This clinging proves that there is past experience and existence and that there is a future life. Man likes this life immensely and strongly yearns for a future life also.

For me, death is only a passing and necessary phenomenon, which every soul has to go through to gain experience for its further evolution and perfection. It opens the door to a higher form of life. Death is the gateway to a fuller life. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE PERFECTION AND ABSOLUTE FREEDOM WITHOUT PLURALITY OF LIVES. That means there was life before and there will be life after physical death of the body! So, one should face death fearlessly and joyfully.

The ideal attitude to death is best illustrated by the answer given to Buddha by his disciple Sariputta. When asked, Well, monk, does not life burden you and dont you like to be released by death? Or, does living fascinate you, because there is a noble mission to fulfil? Sariputta replied, Venerable Teacher, I desire not life. I desire not death. I wait until my hour shall come, like a servant that waits for his wages.
