I HATE vets

Took one of my cats to the vet two weeks ago, she gets dermatitis from flea bites and although she gets flea treatment every four weeks the skin problem flares up about every two years. So I asked for her usual steroid tablets which clear it up in about a week but NO this young vet about 25 thought she should have a steroid injection and an antibiotic. Didn't work and she's much worse.

Went back today and another vet said can't give you the tablets because the injection is still in her system and lasts 6 weeks. I got very cross, said the other guy said it lasted a week and a half! Why didn't the first one give me her usual tablets which always work? Oh maybe he didn't look at her notes, this guy said. Well that's not very good is it? I was boiling by now.

Anyway he looks at her notes again and finds out he has misread them and she had a different medication altogether and the injection lasts a day and a half so I can give her tablets. A day and a half, a week and a half, six weeks WTF are these idiots talking about!

In the UK a vet can earn £50,000 a year, that's $80,000. They seem like a bunch of idiots!

Yes I know steroids are dangerous that's why I pay for expensive flea treatment every month so she only needs the steroids occasionally. He didn't need to tell me that. Why do they talk to you as if you're an idiot!

Good job he only charged me for the tablets and not the consultation! I hate vets.

I was glad it was not "Veterans" that you hate.

    Good luck with the cat.

Poor kitty. Hope your cat gets better. Sounds like those vets are not very detailed and naybe some incompetence.

Other day I went to the Pharmacy to have a perscription filled. Handed my perscription card to the young guy behind the counter. He checked with the Pharmaicist and said it will be 10-15 minutes. I ask for my card back and he said they will hold it. I come back 15 minutes later and they lost my card. The Pharmacist saud the young guy gave it to her but now they can't find it. Of course I question them on how can they lose a card, because there are only so many places it could be behind the counter. Well...after 20 minutes and finding nothing I get an apology, and had to go through the pain-in-the-ass process to get a new card.

I concluded same situation as your vets. People not detailed or focus, and maybe some incompetence.

I live in a small town. I grew up being a "dog" person, but now I guess I'm a "cat" person as feral cats seem to find their way to my house and I have a soft spot in my heart for all animals. (All cats that stay here get fixed, by the way). When one of my cats get sick I take them to the vet here, an old fashioned country vet who does things the old fashioned way, and he will give them a shot and usually the cat gets well.

But, a few years ago I moved back into the city and took my cats with me. It was my experience in the city that if you take a cat to a city vet, first thing they ask you is "where you got the cat". When you tell them that the cat just found its way to your home, unless you are willing to give them a blank check to save the cat at any cost, they will pressure you to put the cat to sleep. I guess this is just their way of dealing with the cat over-population.

After moving back to the small town, I mentioned this to the country vet here, and while not wanting to speak negatively of those in his profession, he basically confirmed my suspicions. Many vets would just rather put a cat to sleep than try to heal them, unless, like I said, you are willing to pay thousands of dollars with no guarantee of them getting better.

OTWO, ha ha! I don't hate veterans LOL Thanks for wishing me luck.

AlphaMan omg what a nightmare. Yeah all you want is for people to do their jobs properly.

apostrate that's sad. We adopted a stray and from a starving skinny thing he's become a big beautiful tabby that my daughter can cradle like a baby and he purrs his heart out.

We're lucky to have a really great vet. I think a good thing to looks for which sounds obvious is whether they love animals or not.

When we go to the vet clinic we meet her 2 cats and 3 or 4 dogs. When you meet her in the street she greets your dog by name. She blogs about dogs and her newsletter includes pet wellbeing tips and new training she's been learning about.

Some are just in it because it's a career and pays well, try and find someone who is well trained but also passionate about it.

I think there are good and bad, as with every field. I don't think 2 is enough of a sample pool to declare them all bad.

May i add, love or hate vets, a well researched INSURANCE policy for pet " medical bills" is sensible.

Yes that's very true Simon. We have very few local vets, most seem to come from other countries because it pays so well in the UK.

I've had good ones and bad ones. The last one was very good. He realized my situation (taking in lots of strays, etc.) and worked with me. He knew I had my own supply of antibiotics, etc. and had no problem with it. Only problem I had was his sloppiness in instructions.

He just retired and two younger guys bought his practice. I was worried, but about two weeks ago I took a really sick kitten to them. My worries were put to rest. The new vet that I met was A+. Very kind and friendly. I told him I already had the cat on amoxicillin and azithromycin, and he didn't seem to care at all. He asked me about Clavamox. I told him that I'd rather have her on Clavamox than amoxicillin, but that I was just out of Clavamox, so he mixed some up. Loved him.

I've seen some cold-hearted ones, too. Some years ago, I saw a vet lance a rabbit's foot with no anesthetic. The poor rabbit screamed. I didn't know rabbits could make such a noise. Also, a few years ago, I saw a vet cut a cow's horns off with something that looked like a poor of bolt cutters. The cow's head was chained to keep it from moving. It screamed and blood dripped out of the horn nubs that were left behind. I was furious and showing it; my wife and mother had to prevent me from telling that vet off.

I agree with Simon. You have to find the ones that love animals and don't just view being a vet as a job.
