As I understand copyright law, you can copy just about anything, if you do not make money on it, and the copy is for educational purposes. Students and faculty make copies all the time for classroom use, and this is viewed as acceptable. Certainly making copies of this program is for educational purposes.
Can I be a *real* killjoy and request that people don't use this forum to share these files.
(my 'official bit')
larc:
I'm not a copyright attorney, but you are right that normally one can make copies for educational use. But distributing copyrighted material over the internet (which is essentially re-broadcasting the program) without NBCs permission is, I'm fairly certain, copyright infringement. NBC told one poster that THEY weren't even selling copies because of copyright issues.
Simon isn't being a killjoy, but rather protecting himself from possible litigation.

Peter, email it to me and I'll upload it to a site. I work for an ISP so bandwidth isn't a problem.

Agreed on the copying and fair use.
However I would also like to point out that Dateline will make transcripts and video copies of their program available as well.

Sorry Simon...I didn't even think of that...I just wanted to make it available to people overseas that wouldn't be able to normally watch it....
Peter
As it was, ICQ let me down...perhaps the file is too big, I'm not sure. Either way, no transfers took place as of yet....
I'm off to sleep now...anyone that wants to contact me, do so, and I'll get back to you after 12 midnight Toronto time.
Cheers all,
Peter (who's dissapointed now and going to bed with his tail between his legs)
So why doesn't someone email or write Dateline and ask for permission? All we have to do is convince them how important it is to let as many people know. They get publicity and the segment gets exposure. Perhaps some of our scribe class Apostates could write a request.
Sincerely,
