The Opposite of Social

I argued with an elder that the organization was
decaying and needed new programs to help its young
    people.

"But that would be social!" he protested.

"And what's so bad about 'social'? I responded.
    "The organization needs 'social'"

I guess religious meetings don't count for anything
spiritual unless they are boring and unpleasant and
a sacrificial chore to attend. I have to laugh when
I hear pleas from Circuit Overseers not to associate
with worldly relatives or weak Witnesses. What's left?

As if Witnesses generally were such hot stuff at
parties (oops, 'get-togethers') - or such interesting
people to talk to! Days spent in crummy jobs, dead
field service, and usually no hobbies or time for
outside interests make Johnny Witness a pretty dull boy
(unless he's leading a double life!).

    Oh, excuse me!
I forgot we're all 'unreliable critics'!

Of course, the Brooklyn Hypocrites told elders - and
publishers- not to cooperate with surveys or studies
done on the organization. So, this way, solid statistics
on depression, suicide, mental illness, and child
molesting are not available in public.

    Shhhhhhh! Quiet! Don't say anything!

It's a 'spiritual paradise', you know?

I'm certain that the GB longs for the days before the Internet when the kinds of stuff you're referring to could be swept under the carpet and kept quiet. The Internet is going to be the undoing of the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, and it's obvious the GB knows it. But, like most old farts who resist change, the GB has its heels dug in as the society and culture through which it swims glides along toward the future, draging with it the GB kicking and screaming and resisting every inch. Too bad. It would be much easier for them to relax and go with the flow. They're going to end up in the same place anyway, they might as well enjoy the trip.

Prior to the Internet it was difficult but not impossible to develop statistics on JW social ills. With the Internet providing a virtual meeting place for Apostates to compare notes and to assemble their observations and experiences, a more accurate picture of the society of the Society has emerged, has come into sharp focus. And the picture that resolves is a sad one indeed.

If there were any doubt that the organization of JWs is a cult, those doubts have been swept away like the moonlight and magnolia days of the Old South: gone with the wind.

The body of publishers of JWs is a sad, sad group. More dysfunctional behavior in any given congregation than the population as a whole. More drunkeness, more spousal abuse, more child abuse including child sex abuse, more dishonesty, more suicide, more depression, more murder, more rape. In short more of everything the Society claims there's less of in its membership.

And this should surprise no one. The organization of JWs is, pure and simple, a cult. And cults attract in the main the disaffected, the marginalized, the ignored, the poor, the anti-social, the angry, the depressed, the lost, all seeking something; seeking stability, meaning, answers. And the Society, seeing this parade of the walking wounded, gets out in front and assumes leadership. But this leadership comes at the price of the spiritual freedom of its followers, a price so many of them seem willing to pay.

And then there are the people like us, many of whom were drug up in the organization. I will not say raised. That is much too kind a word for what happens to young people in the organizations. So we left. And now we're gifted with this Internet where we can do our comparisons, compile our statistics, and point the accusing finger at the dangerous, divisive, destructive cult known as Jehovah's Witnesses.

The Erica story on Dateline was just the beginning. Society is beginning to realize that JWs are a festering, running sore on its face. The WTBTS will not longer be able to hide behind its silent stonewalling. There's too many of us. And to paraphrase Lord Nelson, The spiritual world expects that every Apostate will do their duty.

Just thought I'd throw all that in. Obviously I have too much free time on this lazy Sunday morning as evidenced by the foregoing avalanche of rambling words. I really must remember my ministry school training. But I am serious.

NOTE TO GB: My challenge to debate you boys and all your attorneys is still open by the way. No balls?

The remaining faithful rank and file members will follow their leaders into the oven. Many that have doubts are trapped inside the cult grip. The social seen among them is full of lies because of mistrust between members. Fear of gossip is rampant, fear of elders, fear of disfellowshipping, fear of circuit overseers visits etc. "FEAR FEAR FEAR" is all that many go on. They will claim it's fear of displeasing God that keeps them in line, however the WT god will kill you at the drop of a hat and think nothing of it. Why is the supposed eternal death, at the hands of the WT god such a frightening thing? Is the WT god going to keep you conscious to torment you in some way as the thought in other religions? (ex. Hellfire) Just what is the consequence if one does not measure up? We know the answer if we ever were a Jehovah's Witness, DEATH. I can remember it stated that "we are not a religion but a way of life", "we are life oriented not death oriented" . The latter being said because they promise to show you the way to everlasting life. The unwritten rule among Jehovah's Witnesses is you must live an austere life style to please God, or at least appear to do so. Is that really necessary? I can't speak for the WT god or any other God for that matter so I suppose we should listen to the GB ? They claim to speak for their god so we should all listen to them just because they make the claim? That is what the rank and file members do, blindly, listen by putting faith in men. Between 10 to 15 men of the GB and a bunch of lawyers to run interference for the mistakes so they can hang on to the power they have. Well the power is fading and it's about time, although slow, I can say it's evident as many JW's I speak with will secretly voice an opposing idea.

Then the reason I consider it important that the WT lose it's power is a question I can not always answer. One must have been a member to fully understand the firm grip, the suffocating hold they have on you to keep you there. When does one come to realize their are problems with the WT religion? It's deferent for each individual, that nagging feeling, that uncertainty, the doubts, the injustice, the boredom, the monotony... something will trigger and put up a red flag. It's time to get out, and out is a whole new life. So don't be afraid of the big organization, it's not that big, don't be afraid of displeasing the WT god, the GB DOES NOT represent any God and never did.

    Metatron,

I am very shocked at your lack of faith.

The February 2002 KM, reminded JW's that apparently they are "The Happiest People On Earth".

It is obvious that you have forgotten just how happy you really are, or should I say were....lol

Try looking in the mirror and practicing a 'Kingdom smile', try to make it natural looking, after all we would not want to bring disrepute on our God's name by looking unhappy would we?

If you are having difficulty being happy, talk to the older men in your congregation, they can help you strengthen your facial muscles and put you on the well worn path to Prozac.

    Best regards - HS

    Francois,

I agree with this statement above. Loud and clear. I came out long before the Internet and it was very very difficult to find others with whom to communicate. All friends and contacts were cut off. For about fifteen years, may wife and I could communicate with no one

With the Internet, a raging fire has started that is ravaging the grain fields of the WT. But this conflagration has not only brought into focus for the exJWs a more accurate picture of what is going on. Witnesses and their leaders themselves are seeing the sorry and sad state of affairs within their ranks. that was not clearly evident before.

The WT operates with extreme secrecy, all documents and statistics are classified. Reports of DO’s and CO’s are filtered through rose colored glasses. There is an idolatrous worship of the organisation, and those bringing in the information , bring only the fruits and flowers, and minimize the crap. Congregations, Branches, and even the organization at Brooklyn are all compartmentalized one area from another. No one has an accurate whole picture of what is going on.

Any statistics published from Brooklyn are sanitized, stripped of any meaningful details. eg: So many thousands have fallen away ......blah blah blah. The cries of pain, of sorrow, of boredom, unhappiness, abuse, you name it, are not collectively heard within the isolated walls of Brooklyn, and are also silenced within the congregations, even to the point to relegating the distress and cries of infants to the ‘rest’ rooms.

GET THIS PEOPLE,! THE CRY OF A CHILD IS MORE IMPORTANT AND CARRIES MORE WEIGHT IN THE UNIVERSE THAN ANY WORDS DELIVERED BY SOME SMOOTH TALKING, SUIT AND TIED MOUTHPIECE LEANING ON A PODIUM.

So now the loud collective cry of pain is reaching the crescendo, and no one, within or without can be oblivious to the roar, and shut it out from their ears.

Let the [i[sound and the fury,[/i] continue,

This thread brought back a rather unpleasant memory from my past - I remember reading a Watchtower article once where a mother stated that she had carried her child in her belly and gone to every meeting for 9 months, and then when the child was born, he was already accustomed to the so-called "rhythm" of Dub life. This is the most horrible of horrible things I can possibly think of (apart from the kids that could possibly have resulted from the union of Barrymore and Green, which thankfully is not something we've got to worry about nomore).

Imagine being Dubified before you're born! That kid had absolutely no say in the matter, not that most kids have any say until they're legal adults anyway. Spending 20 years with no chance of escape under the auspices of the BORG is a very terrifying thing for me to imagine. Luckily my parents were only assimilated when I was about 6 years old, so I had 6 glorious years of freedom before that point - that's probably the reason my sister & I left later on, because we had had a taste of freedom earlier on in our lives. As they say, once you've tasted freedom, you can never go back!

Also, didn't you people notice that babies and kids were always happy and content upon leaving the Hall, but the moment the Kingdom Songs started they were bawling like crazy? WTF? Talk about forced indoctrination! And the heavy-handed tactics some of those parents used on their kids is just...I can't even think about it. Thankfully my family was assimilated (resistance is futile y'know) long after that stage of my life and that of my sister, and thankfully my parents are both pretty much absolute pacifists, so we never had to endure that sort of treatment. WHEW!

The main problem with children in the Tower today is that they are being taught completely unsupportable beliefs from birth onwards. This smacks to me very strongly indeed of mind-control. Surely if this "religion" was of "God", they wouldn't need to be taught that it was THE RIGHT RELIGION TO BE IN?

    SYN;
Talk about unpleasant memories......I'm afraid I can "go ya" one better! Somewhere around 1997 or 1998, I remember a comment during a Public Talk that dealt with "training a child up from infancy", and that this "training" should begin in the womb.

The speaker then brought out that the unborn child was keenly perceptive and could "receive beneficial training" from the mother during the meetings. The method?

By firmly tapping the mother's stomach with a pencil if the baby began to kick or "act up" while a meeting was in progress; to teach the baby that children are expected to remain still during Theocratic Meetings!

    It made my skin crawl............

Ahhhhh, the wonderful world of wacky Watchtower wisdom!

    Hugs,
