In 1917 Pastor Russell died having sold his family business and donated a total of $250,000 to the Society, a fortune in those days.
Within two months Pastor Russell was replaced by Judge Rutherford .The appointment was not approved by many of the men who had faithfully worked under Pastor Russell.

The seven men who comprised the Board of Directors thought that he had too much power. "Their idea was to make the President's position secondary to the Board of Directors and limit his authority to that of an advisor." (Page 70)

Four members of the Board agreed to this change. Before action was taken, Rutherford wrote and produced a new book "The Finished Mystery " to be released as the latest publication, without consulting the members of the Board. The opposing members of the Board were outraged and a five-hour row followed. Judge Rutherford used a legal technicality to dismiss from their positions, the four members of the Board who had been handpicked by Pastor Russell. From then on the Society was under the total control of Judge Rutherford.
This group formed the basis for the present day Governing Body.

Although the structure was in place under Rutherford, he was pretty much a dictator. Although he was a charasmic leader to his flock, their growth was not exceptional under his iron fisted reign. His successor Nathon H. Knorr opeated more like modern day corporate executive. He instiuted the training progams at the hall, the sales quotas, etc. It was under his management that the JWs saw rapid growth. The GB became more of a factor under his administration.

    larc, thank you.

Do you happen to know what year Nathan Knorr took hold of management? I'm only asking because I'm doing a search on figures/numbers. Not finacial figures, but membership figures.

:He instiuted the training progams at the hall, the sales quotas, etc. It was under his management that the JWs saw rapid growth. The GB became more of a factor under his administration.

actually, sales quotas etc. coincide with members AND money. :-) So I'm doing both as of now. I know that the growth either way ( finacialy and memberwise ) were up before 1975. I think the membership must have dropped then, and along with that, had it's effect finacially. I'm searching for what made it all pick up again from that point. This is just to let you know why I'm asking. It must have something to do with some kind of change that the WBTS made. I'm just trying to locate the change.
So...maybe the year Knorr took over had to do with it. I dunno.

    thanks again. :-)

    Somebody,

The GB was formed in 1944 I think. That is when they decided that the board of directors of the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society of Pennsylvania was also the Governing Body of the FDS. The 1260 days were supposed to have been fulfilled then...at least in the latest understanding. Prior to that time there was no GB. Don't forget the FDS was Russel for a long time.

This is sort of covered in the Jan 15, 2001 Watchtower, but you have to go back to Watchtowers of 1971 to get the details that are only alluded to in recent years.

I'll post more on this subject as I don't have the Watchtower or my CD-ROM (Compact disk - Revisionist Organizational Material) to hand.

    Hey, Thirdson,

Thank you for your input. And as far as your quote at the end ('To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing') I say, Ain't that the damned truth! :-)

I'll be looking forward for what more you find on the subject!

    Somebody,

I stole the quote. It is from Judge Clarence Thomas, he has the quote on a plaque in his office.
