There are lots of mentally ill JWs out there.

I hope no one misunderstands my post.It was a crime and she must face the consequences.It's just that an unfortunate set of circumstances were at play here.

But we both did home births for years and as for my limited knowledge it is possible, though to me unimaginable, that an obese person can be pregnant and not realize it. The have to ignore a lot of signs but many young people today do not know much about pregnancy and child birth. And the bowl movement story is true. Again, at some point she had to realize this was not normal.

Maybe your correct that is a very cold hearted thing to say.

If she knowingly killed her child that would go FAR beyond being cold hearted.
If she knowingly killed her child then she is i'll and should have been getting treatment.
It use to be, getting theorpy was frowned on if you were a JW. Things have changed since, to what degree I would imagine it depends on where you are.
There are a lot of JW who suffer from depression among other things
but who knows how it was viewed in this womens family.
All we can do is sit around and guess about it. But looking at this as a very sick thing to do on purpose is accurate.
It's one of those things that should have been prevented.

Denial is a wonderful thing.

I've had to deal with women who completely denied being pregnant as you show them the baby they just delivered.

I would tend to believe this poor woman to have major mental problems besides denial. Obviously her jw background made her live a double life. Like LadyLee said, "If she really didn't know then it's a different story and if she is mentally ill then that too is a different story."

Isn't it ashame that what she was thinking she would avoid, in her mind, was being shunned and the congo did that to her anyway instead of helping her with all the problems she is having.

My thoughts on this article:

I do know that, even though it's extremely rare, a woman can be pregnant without knowing it. Especially, if she already has a history of irregular periods. I know for myself it's a bit hard to fathom because I had such difficult pregnancies and births.

Obviously, she had emotional problems that were serious enough to be treated with therapy and drugs. I think this might play into why she may have killed her infant. I know that one of the reasons that some JWs hold on so tenaciously to the doctrines, especially depressed females, is the hope that one day they will be free of their personal struggles. That there will be a time when the slate will be wiped clean and happiness and joy will reign. I have seen this in my own family.

If that pregnancy, and resulting baby, were to be found out, she would be DF'd and all of that would be lost. Even though a rational person would be able to see beyond this, maybe she couldn't at the time. It is certainly no excuse for her behavior, if found guilty. It's just another sad case of what a JW will do keep themselves in good standing with a group of old men, that they believe, holds the key to their salvation.

I remember a news story from some 6-7 years ago. The Female World Championship in -- do you call it "Handball" in the US? - anyway, held in Rome, Italy. A Roumanian star player played a match on Friday, gave birth to her child on the hotel room in the same evening, threw "it" in the garbage container, and played a new match the next day .......... "All for the sports!" .....
You have mental cases everywhere, and although I have hard times trying to understand how a person could do such a thing, I am very sorry to see statements like "typical J.W.", "look what a cult does to people" etc. How many have not done this within Christianity, the Moslem world, Buddhism? Even in the hated-by-so-many Witness community, this ain't exactly everyday behaviour!

This is a sad, sad thread. I agree this happens all over the world and the saddest part is that we live on a planet where the dominant animal (thats us) does not welcome babies. I think that much of this comes from the patriarchal systems which insist on having a known father for a child. In matrilineal systems it was your mother and her property which got inherited. In fact your mothers brother would be more responsible for you than your biological father. But I digress...
This woman had been raised in a society which puts so much pressure on sexual closeness and appearance that simple loving gestures are always interpreted to mean sex. I remember being out in service on a lovely spring day in Wisconsin. I was walking arm in arm down the street with a sister who turned and said to me "don't you realize what people will think of us walking like this, ...?" I was shocked . So women can't express love to friends... I think I hated Wis for that reason. Anyway back to this other woman. She (being a jw) probably had a loveless untouched life. In her illness and desparation she had sex to feel loved and wanted. So her denial of pregnancy when she realized what this revelation would mean that she'd lose everyone who she thought cared about her is understandable but not condonable.
She did murder her baby. Her baby who was unwelcomed by both mother and society. Thats a sad thing. That no one was close enough to her to know that she might be depressed and need medical attention. What about the bastard who got her preggers in the first place? Just another guy slingin' sperm willy nilly. If someone had noticed anything, she would now have a precious baby to love and care for and to leave the bORG for.Or she would have lovingly given a childless couple their dream of parenthood. So many possibilities are cut off because of useless cold patriarchal systems.
