In a recent discussion, someone asked about a quote from the Borg about the great benefits to be derived from the AWAKE! magazine, a.k.a. KIRAP! (I tried to find the thread but I couldn't and I didn't make note of who was asking. Sorry)

I think I found your quote:

    educational value of: w83 6/15 31

    An Excellent Education
IT HAS been said that by reading the Watchtower and Awake! magazines, along with other publications of Jehovah's Witnesses, a person will receive, over a period of years, a considerable and broad education. To illustrate, one of Jehovah's Witnesses wrote the following letter:
    (...)
Would you like to grow in knowledge, obtaining an education of even much greater value than can be received in any college? You can do so by reading regularly this magazine and its companion, Awake! Not only will these journals help you to keep up with world events but they will also help you to see how these events fulfill the Bible prophecies regarding the time of the end of this entire system of things. Yes, regularly reading these publications not only will improve your knowledge of secular matters but will also provide you with knowledge that will put you in line to live forever in God's righteous new system.-John 17:3; 2 Peter 3:13.

    Who said it?

Probably not 'a scientist', as the Awake! is always discrediting those nerdy bastards. Haha...isn't it funny how an unsubstantiated claim is given more weight by the WT than a reasonable opinion from an educated and sincere professional?

Well, thanks a lot WTBTS, but I'd rather continue reading Newsweek and Time and watch the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and Dateline-NBC !

LOL, if I ever have occasion to complete another job application, I shall cross out the "education" portion and attach a copy of above quote! We shall see what the "value" is of any job offer I receive.

Yes, I read every issue for YEARS I guess that means I have completed my post-doctoral research...LOL

Their false pride never fails to stun me.

Amazing is right. I heard this bit of nonsense about Awake! when I was a kid in the early 1960s.

A more astute observation comes from Millions Now Living Will Never Die: A Study of Jehovah's Witnesses by Alan Rogerson:

A long acquaintance with the literature of the Witnesses leads one to the conclusion that they live in the intellectual twilight zone. That is, most of their members, even their leaders, are not well educated and not very intelligent. Whenever their literature strays onto the fields of philosophy, academic theology, science or any severe mental discipline their ideas at best mirror popular misconceptions, at worst they are completely nonsensical.

Hey joannadandy, you remind me of a friend from high school. What do you think?...

This is all so true. When I began college in 1992 (at 37 yrs old) I thought it was a more or less an accepted choice in the bORG. Boy was I wrong! With my husband , still an elder dealt with others who would comment on his wife doing the unacceptable. At that time I was really trying hard to stay IN but the org does not make that easy for anyone who develops an informed conscience. I graduated (yeah) and started grad school . I wrote my DA letter in 1997. Many people who supposedly LOVED me would not talk to me anymore. A few other friends who we were close to also left within the next year ( I wonder who got the blame?) C'est le vie. Now my husband no longer accepts the WTS as god's channel. I think he even felt the freedom when he bought our first Christmas tree in 18yrs.

I also heard that same lie about the WT and AW + to a 4 yr college education. Oh please.!!!.. Anyone who says that has obviously never completed their 4yr degree. Give it a rest ignorant borg.
