This is a request to get some assistance in preparing an estimate of how many Jehovah's Witness children leave the religion during or after adolescence. I know the figure is substantial based on my own observations, but we need some way to document it. Please put on your thinking cap and publish your ideas here. This is very important.

    Thanks,

    Lee

i would make a web page and build a survey form into it, asking specific and detailed questions, such as age and reason, how (df'd or da'd), etc. or check out the census site or other sites similar to that for hints, and plug the information into a spreadsheet. i know you're not specifically seeking why they left, but if you ask that, they might be more willing to share their information with you. and assure them that it would all remain confidential. then just publish your results right there on the web site, in a guestbook or something. i would try to make it easy and fast to use...

It seems like Amazing or Maximus had a thread about this very subject, but it was a long time ago. I will see if I can find it for you. If it was by Amazing, maybe he will recall which one I'm talking about.

I think this will be difficult to determine without records from the Society. I would say the majority leave, but of those a substancial number return to the "truth" later on.

I believe most people who leave still "believe it's the truth" and intend to return at a future date... say sometime before "Armageddon"..lol

I think Maximus said the Society knew it was 68%.

I can see where you are going with this, blood-wise!

    tough one lee
    here goes
1 get average number of witnesses per country
2 find out average birth rate per country
3 try to find out percentage of converts to jws
4 take away birth rate + converts from average jws = decline of jws not converts
    or something like that
well did i say i was a statistician ? im a window cleaner, come up with your own ideas.
    good luck

    Lady Lee,

I think Josephus's approach would be ideal, but as Path stated, I doubt that you could get the statistics. Perhap, you could pilot test a survey right here. Questions I would include: 1. How long ago did you leave the religion. 2. How many people did you know under the age of 25. 3. Of these how many: (a) left by that age (b) did not leave (c) don't know - lost track of them. To save you time, you could email Simon, he can set up a survey that keeps a running total of the results.

crawdad, check out his homepage. It should answer all your questions.

I would try to find a large group of people who have left the religion, and ask the following questions.

    1. Were you raised "in the truth" (born to Witness parents) ____________

    2. Were you baptized? __________ If so, at what age? __________

    3. Are you still an active Witness? ___________

    4. Did you leave the Witness religion? If so, at what age? ___________

    5. If you've left, do you plan on returning to the JWs? ____________

Discount all responses that were not raised as JWs, and were baptized after the age of majority.

Discount all responses that are still Witnesses, or plan to return.

Get some bean counter to crunch the numbers for you.

The really tough part will be finding a large group of ex-JWs to survey.
