How many times were you told, "You Just Don't Qualify Yet to be an Elder"

The first time I attended a meeting at a KH, I thought, "I wonder how this guy got roped into lugging the microphone around."

Only later did I learn that a person had to "earn" the "privilege" of doing so.

Shades of Tom Sawyer and the fence!

John, I got to the point were I figured. If they do not want me to help, handling mics, sound, M.S., etc... Then they could do ALL the work themselves! This included cleaning the toilets!

It will never happen ToesUp, they would get all the women and kids to clean up the toilets before they dirty their hands.

John, reminds me of the episode where it was our book study's turn to clean the toilets and the elder that had that book study was busy with the others in the meeting room. At one point I must have gotten irritated and slammed the bucket around a little ( ajoining wall to meeting room ) as he came out and explained he had had business to take care of and would help after, which was just a quick token wipe down of counter tops.

To be honest when I was new it felt like a priviledge at first.

I was on the fast track to being a MS within the same year following my baptism, what burnt me out in the end was the weekday night meetings, they just became too much for me to handle after a while. Just the thought of one now gives me anxiety. I recall that whenever it was announced that the MS and elders had to gather for another meeting on a different night it would make me think of never being able to step up to the plate so to speak. Glad it didn't happen.

Oh and yes being single myself the get a position and have access to a hot sister for marriage was very much out there and in vogue. What a weird bunch to say the least, all due to a bunch of men in NY fancying themselves as God's mouthpiece.

I was told that all the time.

Apparently an elder with lady-parts would be far too distracting for the other elders, and sisters are not allowed to wear a suit and tie because that would be too threatening and too lesbian.

Pity, I would have rocked at being an elder. 😉

I always thought of reaching out as the JW male version of gymnastics.

He starts off with a run, does a somersault, then leaps straight up into the air, somersault in the air with a backward flip and a half twist, forward flip with double somersault and full twist, triple somersault with a backward flip, 1 1/2 twist with double somersault and backward flip, double somersault with half twist and backward flip, triple somersault with forward flip and 2 twists, etc, etc..........

I never qualified to be an elder as I didn't have the necessary plumbing equipment.

    Never!

I had one hell of a battle even getting to be an MS - despite being equipped with the necessary plumbing!

No doubt he good old Holy Spirit had something against me (read : I must have got in somebody of importance's bad books somewhere along the line - and that person in turn had a direct telephone circuit to the Holy Spirit).

You have no idea of all the stupid meetings you were spared!

I was on the fast track to elder until I was derailed in 1991. A made up JC (years later when I attended MTS as an elder I confirmed even organizationally it wasn't a JC) was held against me with false accusers. So I was scrubbed as MS/pioneer. I changed congos, same KH. Old congo kept putting their nose wher it ought not. Eventually made MS, same song and dance about elder. Only when a single MTS grad named Michael Emilio came through as CO did I get elder. And only because I got advance notice did I know about Emilio, I got to him before anyone in my town did, invited him to lunch, became friends. He forced my elder appointment through, as well as my MTS ap.

The longer version is in my old post in 07, 08 after I left the cult. Having been behind the curtain, I can tell you THERE IS NO HOLY SPIRIT BEHIND ELDER APPOINTMENTS. ONLY POLITICS.
