I was nervous to take my daughter to the lake near us. (beautiful - looks clean) we have beaches around the lake here - but last year a bunch of kids got foot & mouth disease from the lake. Apparently some raw sewage got into the lake (it is a huge lake - part of a series of lakes).
I think I am immune for leeches. When I traveled through the rain forest of Thailand I had dozens of leeches that were sucking my blood. Besides of the bleeding (I felt no pain!) it didnt effect me.
Sometimes leeches are even used in medical treatments to stimulate the bloodcirculation of re-attached amputated fingers etc.

It looks to me, fellow posters, like Grout is trying to throw us off the trail. Look at Grout's profile pic. I ask you, does he not look like the leech in question?!?!?!

Scootergirl - OMG! I have never heard of anything like this occuring. I wonder if the leeches in that lake 'have' something? Well, I know THAT leech did, but perhaps there is something in the lake affecting all of the leeches.
Those pics! That looks incredibly sore and uncomfy. Personally, I am not a lake person. It's the ocean or a pool for me.

Ewww... poor kid. I hate leeches with a passion. I've been bitten by them, but never had an infection like that! I hope he recovers quickly.

Actually, when I saw the pics, I thought of drawing some eyes and a nose on his chest, and the navel could pass as a mouth! The infection certainly looks like a couple of lips to me!

Down here in NC the only place I know where there are leaches is in the ponds. I thought it was the same in MN. We used to go wade in the slues* and came out with leaches but never the lakes.
This is the first i've heard of leaches causing infections also. For this reason I am sending this post to my mom, since my children are in Minnesota with her and they love to go to the lake to swim.

My daughter had a leech on her little toe and pulled it off......she now has an infection also! There must be something in the water. The doctor said that we don't know if the leech was the cause of the infection or the lesion was the "passageway" for the infection. Either way, my children are staying out of the lake for awhile.
