    Can anyone substantiate?

I heard from a very reliable source the following regarding the Dateline episode that aired on NBC: J.R. Brown was the guest speaker at the convention that I attended two weekends ago in Albany, GA. and he stated to a close friend of mine who always has parts on the convention that Dateline clipped and changed things around so much that a negative light was cast on Jehovahs Witnesses and that it was not reflective of what the Society was led to believe would be presented. He also said that at some point the Society requested a live interview with Dateline but they refused. In discussing these issues with my wife she in fairness and correctness has stated that there are always two sides to every story. The only thing that I have right now is the letter from the Society to Mr. Greenberg which is dated and states that they appreciate his efforts to be fair and balanced.

Can anyone substantiate any of this? I would like to get a jump on the defense that my wife and Elders will put forth tonight when we meet.

    Thanks!

    Olympiad,

I don't understand why you are meeting with the elders about this, but that's your business. I see a danger to you unless you, too, want to be seen as "causing divisions" in the congregation. But perhaps I've missed other of your posts...

As regards the claim that the WT Society DID want a live interview with Dateline after a time but then was refused? I STRONGLY suggest you go to the source: contact Richard Greenburg. I know I e-mailed Mr. Greenberg, but I've changed e-mail addresses and the mail is gone. The information to contact him used to be up at www.silentlambs.org but no longer. Perhaps Bill Bowen or another poster reading this could provide it. Mr. Greenburg promptly answered my note.

    Good luck!

Well, that's a very interesting thing that you heard..

If indeed that is true, then I think the Watchtower will have cause to Sue Dateline and win, since it was clearly stated (I believe) on the dateline show that Dateline approached the watchtower and asked for a live interview, and their request was denied, but they did send the taped interview from J.R. Brown.

If the watchtower is telling the truth, then they should sue Dateline for misinformation being presented.

My guess: They will not sue, because they are lying.

They won't sue because they don't have a case - the first amendment being what it is.

    AND they're lying.

Actually, I believe you can sue if someone slanders you, and that would be slanderous if indeed they aired that they asked the WT for an interview and the WT declined when in fact the WT said YES and Dateline declined them airtime..

Of course, I wouldn't hold our breath the the WT will sue, simply because I don't believe they have a case.. But they can sue anyone else (The recent case in Ohio for instance), and they seem to go to untold lengths to keep their 'name' clean, so I have no doubght that they would sue if indeed they had a case...

Coming out of JR BRowns mouth, I suspect it is all a bunch of hogwash. Dateline presented a copy of the letter where the Watchtower declined an online interview, did they not? Since they declined any interview, how could it be distorted?

It sounds to me like Brown was just espousing the normal JW mentality of "we're being unfairly persecuted."

Huh, a JW lied? Say it ain't so.. I always believed they were soooo trustworthy and would never lie to a fellow JW!!! Ugh... I hope all the JW's out there take note of the deception and the lie that they just tried to pull over on ya.. !!!!!

I wonder if there are two witnesses to J.R's claim.. Heck, we can get him disfellowed..

Funny what the dubs call a bad light and what some people call the truth and facts..Yet I forget that the only good light is new light...and that ANYTHING disturbing the "loving arrangement" in unacceptable. When you give someone a video taped interview as the only choice INSTEAD of a live interview, one can only assume that the TV show is going to edit it. In fact, if the WT had spent more time talking w/Dateline and being straightforward about the whole thing, no such rumor or heresay would ever occur. They won't sue because then discovery would start happening and they really don't want that.

    Sincerely,

Watchtower's statements to the congregations were that they would not comment publicly on what appears to be differences between Witnesses. Public televison interviews were not an apporpriate venue for disagreeing Witnesses.

    It is the one and only admission that Watchtower has ever made, in my opinion, that this is not 'persecution from Satan' and not 'persecution from the worldly governments' and not 'persecution from disgruntled former members';

This is an important admission from Watchtower that they have hurt their own people and their own people have to go outside the religion to obtain justice, compensation and closure.

A tremendous victory for all the jw's, non-jw's and ex-jw's who have worked together so hard for so long in an unprecedented effort toward postive change. The lambs are ROARING!!!

Aaaahhhh the world it is a changing....
