Joseph Campbell Question

The late and most eminent Joseph Campbell made a statement in his discussions on myths that it is believed that the angels were made lower than humans. Being a dumb dub, I was taught just the opposite. Has anyone heard this before, and are there any scriptural arguments for that assertion?

One another note, Campbell relates he was swimming at a men's club and when he was finished he sat next to a Catholic priest by the pool. The priest asked him if he was a Catholic and Campbell said that while he was raised a Catholic, he no longer considered himself one.

The priest said, "If the existence of God and God's purpose for mankind could be proved to you logically, would you be a believer?"

Campbell replied, "Well if that could be proven logically, there would be no need for faith and you'd be out of a job!"

The priest left in a huff! Those religionists are soooo sensitive about stuff like that!

I've read some of Campbell's stuff, but certainly not all of it. And also saw the Moyer's interview. I never ran across anything like the statement you're asking about. But then my exposure to Campbell isn't anywhere near complete. I can't imagine him saying that, though.

If angels were made a little lower than us, I have to believe that we could see them. However they are apparently out of our range of vision.

Have you ever read the Urantia Book?

Farkel: I think the second chapter of Hebrews is where the quote comes from:

I'll just put in a few of the verses:

5 - For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

6 - But one in a certain place testified, saying What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that hou visitest him?

7 - Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hand:

11- For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

This is from The King James Verson...(for some reason I can't cut and paste...otherwise, I would have put in comparative copies from other versions).

THIS COMPUTER I'M ON IS A PIECE OF CRAP! I've had to type everything 3 times, now I just lost some additional quotes for your original question....

to sum up...read the first 7 verses of Hebrews, Chapter 1. We share in Christ inheiritance...read John 10:34 where Christ quotes Psalms 82 saying "Ye are gods".....

If I was on another computer, I would be of more help...sorry...but I just blew my wad with patience.

Hebrews 1 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

Hebrews 2:7 says man was made a little lower than angels.

Hebrews 1:14 quoted above may be the verse, but I'd argue (see what Logic class does to you?[ ;)] ) that if Jesus Christ came "to minister to many" and is God['s Son] to whom every knee should bend (Philippians somewhere), then angels could certainly be higher than men, too, and still minister to them.

And who is this Joseph Campbell guy anyway?

    Romans 8:17
Now if we are children, then we are heirsheirs of God and coheirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Matthew 26:53
Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? Legions of angels were at jesus' disposal even before he suffered. So then, by pauls above statement, christians would have them at their disposal also, before suffering. They are like little jesii. SS
