The BEST things about the USA

The Constitution is the best thing about the United States. I truly think that our republican form of government is the source for the pride that other nations seem to find insufferable. It is what underlies our belief that we are the greatest nation on earth. (Not the greatest PEOPLE on earth -- for there are great people to be found everywhere -- but the greatest NATION on earth!) Truly, the founding fathers were geniuses who took the best of British common-law and French Republicanism while completely excising royalty. The result is a superior form of government from which flows the many freedoms mentioned above.
It is a rather common error on the part of most foreigners to believe that Americans think highly of themselves just because they think highly of their country. Plenty of Americans are aware that other peoples and cultures, ancient and modern, have contributed much more to civilisation than the still fledgling United States. In the modern era, however, there is still no nation more attractive to those who value freedom and the chance to improve one's standard of living than the United States of America.
What a pleasure it is to be able to finally express such emotions after years of stifling the slightest sign of patriotism!

1) I can drive my car any where I want to go. If I don't break any laws there is little chance of being stopped and searched by the police. In many countries road blocks are set up for the police to receive bribes so you can pass on a road.
I don't know how much a drivers license is right now but I'm sure it's under $50.00 for 4 years or so. (I really can't remember.)
JanH told me it costs $2000.00 in Norway to get a drivers license.
I love the freedom of driving MY car, any where, any time I want without interference from the government. Americans have cheap gas and food which allows us to have money to buy all those products made in Mexico etc...This does provide a living for many in other countries. It may not be a great living but some consider it better than starving.( I'm all for improving working conditons for all before you all jump down my throat.)
2) Most of the museums of art in the US are private collections so the government cannot dictate what will be displayed. Freedom of expression means a great deal to me; especially after my JW experience. This is just an example of the freedom for artists in this country. It maybe challenged sometimes but the courts always up hold the artists right to express themselves without government interference.
3) I delight in the beauty and variety of landscape, seasons and climate that exist in the USA. I enjoy the option of living or visiting the mountains, deserts, farmland lands, tropical, and arctic climates. Then, there are the lakes, rivers, sea, and oceans to experince. I appreciate the choice of all these different types of climate that exist with in this countries boundaries. As a citizen I can live in anywhere I chose within in these borders and I don't need permission from the government to move around.
I also have so many different kinds of people to choose to live near. We are a mixed people and I love all the different cultures I can experience, if I choose.
I savor the of variety people that's why I fancy living in the center in the world. ( LOL Americans can guess where I'm talking about )
BTW.... JanH: can you live in a tropical location within Norway's borders if you wanted to move?... LOL... just giving you a hard time today..hehehe

I've several friends from Great Britain, and this is what they've noticed about the US.
Climate control , especially Air Conditioning
Ice Cubes, the fist sized American kind, and plenty of them, for your 32oz drink (for less than $1.50)
When you go to an eating establishment, and order "a sandwich", you will get a) An attractive sandwich, with plenty of meat on hearty bread; b) A side that is usually included in the cost; c) It will usually be served attractively, sometimes garnished. and d) you will get some sort of pleasant service from a neatly dressed, polite individual (unless you go to McDonald's, in which decent service is a crapshoot.)
After visiting this country, they realized why Yanks are so demanding when they visit overseas. We get used to certain standards, and are surprised when those standards are missing from the older, "more civilzed", nations.

Having visited one of the more rural towns in Mexico. What I love most about America, is that I always have running water. My ex mother-in-law ran a shower house where people paid to take a shower, beacuse they didn't have running water at their house. She herself had to have this water delivered to her house and it was put into a holding tank.
For drinking water, they would go to one of the few water mains and had to carry the water home in buckets.
I still love visiting Mexico, but would never want to live there.

The only 2 places outside of the USA I have been to are Moldova (a former Republic of the USSR-near Ukraine and Romania) & Austria. The day I stepped foot back on American soil at Dulles, I was terribly emotional. It was then I realized how fortunate I was to have been born in the USA. It is those experiences I base my observations on.
- Diversity of people
- Freedom to worship as I choose without fear of being beaten up or mocked
- Access to healthcare-we complain alot about our healthcare system, but we don't even have a clue how good we have it! Many Moldovans can't even get Tylenol if they have a headache. They were so happy when given one Tylenol for pain and it was like a "miracle drug" for them! ANd I don't even want to tell you how many children did not have their own toothbrush or even toothpaste! I could go on and on...
- Freedom to travel within my country without fear of being pulled over (for the most part!)by corrupt policemen who only want to bribe you. ( this happened to my group about 3 times in Moldova)
- Elevator maintenanance & regulations! (scary over there!)
- Yes, toilet paper! (scary over there!)
- For that matter-TOILETS! (do you know that in most of Moldova, they use outhouses with holes where you must squat over?) The aparments that had toilets you coudln't flush!
- Electricity-many places I was in had unreliable electricity
- Fresh running Water that is safe to drink ( my hostess had to lug in jugs of water for washing up with and boil it for drinking)
- Refrigeration!
- Air conditioning
- Hot water (every night my hostess would boil a big pot of water for me to wash up with)
- Safety. One night I lay in bed listening to all this commotion out side and I got to thinking that if someone needed help-would they receive it?
I had a wonderful time meeting the people of Moldova- I LOVED my experience and never complained once-I truly felt blessed to have been able to go and meet so many wonderful people-the people of that country are remarkable for what they endure on a daily basis. I know that there are countries even worse off than they are! I can't even fathom what it would be like to grow up in any other country besides America.
I wish every American was able to see what life is like outside our borders to truly appreciate how blessed/fortunate we are!

Ice Cubes, the fist sized American kind, and plenty of them, for your 32oz drink
I recall a dear friend of mine relating to me the frustration she felt, when visiting Europe, that her sodas were not served with icecubes. They had to be specifically requested, to her suprise.
